Patterson: Lumberjacks not to be underestimated

Published Sep 3, 2008

Last weekend, several heavily-favored college football programs were upset by competition perceived as inferior. With Division 1-AA Stephen F. Austin visiting Amon G. Carter Stadium for the Frogs' home opener, head coach Gary Patterson said there will be no overlooking the Lumberjacks.

"They're not going to quit attacking," Patterson said of the Lumberjacks. "They will come after you for 60 minutes."

While Stephen F. Austin may play less accomplished teams, the squad's ability to fill up the scoreboard has Patterson's, and the team's, full attention.

Football season brings newfound hope for home team

Can you smell that?

No, its not the smell of overcooked hamburgers or stale beer left over from Labor Day.

Nope, that smell is definitely pigskin.

This time every year, I get a little bit antsy because football season is back. And I'm sure just about every red-blooded American feels the same.

Although the feeling is the same, everyone reacts to kick-off a little bit differently.

Freshmen lead soccer team to two victories

The soccer team remained unbeaten after two games during the three-day weekend.

The Frogs beat the Xavier Musketeers 3-0 Friday night and played to a 2-2 tie against the Mississippi Rebels to make the team's record 2-0-1. Freshman forward Jordan Calhoun's first of a two-goal performance Friday came unassisted in the 17th minute. She netted a second with two seconds remaining in the half with a swift chip into the bottom left corner of the net off a hard return header into the box from freshman defender Alex Mechalske.

TCU defeated the University of New Mexico, 37-0, on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007 at Amon Carter Stadium.

Frogs open season with conference game

Published Aug 29, 2008

The football team will begin the season against a conference opponent, the New Mexico Lobos, for the first time since 2003 when they beat Tulane 38-35 as members of Conference USA.

Head coach Gary Patterson knows starting the season on the road against a conference opponent isn't easy.

"Starting off the season with a conference game against a team like New Mexico will be quite a challenge," Patterson said. "Playing against a conference opponent on the road is always tough. We understand that it is going to be a very good crowd and a loud crowd."

She netted her second goal with two seconds remaining in the half off a hard return header into the box from freshman Alex Mechalske. A swift chip into the bottom left corner put the Frogs up 2-0 going into the half.

Volleyball starts season with win

In a non-conference match in the Nike/Molten Invitational, the Horned Frogs utilized a strong front row attack and accurate passing to sweep the Lady Techsters 25-18, 25-21, 25-15 and open the season with a win.

After falling behind 5-0 in the first game, the Frogs got it together and cruised through the second and third games, tightening their passing and hitting along the way.

Soccer team hopes to add two wins this weekend

Published Aug 29, 2008

After an impressive start to the season with a 5-0 victory over Stephen F. Austin State University on Aug. 22, the soccer team marches on with two home games this weekend.

Although not much is known about this weekend's opponents, head coach Dan Abdalla said his team can expect quite a challenge.

"We know they're both going to be very well-coached, hard-working teams, so they are both going to be games where we have to make sure we bring our top-level game," Abdalla said.

Clinton’s convention speech effective in unifying Party

Published Aug 29, 2008

Hillary Clinton's Tuesday night speech at the Democratic National Convention in Denver was as effective as her gaudy, orange pant-suit. It kept my attention, served its purpose and was aesthetically disturbing.

It all began with a stunning video homage to the former first lady's life work followed by a heartfelt introduction by daughter Chelsea Clinton, whom I actually had the opportunity to speak with when she came to campus last semester.

New Maxima SV not as sporty as advertised

Published Aug 29, 2008

The 2009 Nissan Maxima SV is advertised by Nissan USA as the return to Nissan's past, with the reinvention of its four-door sports car concept. This is a much needed change as the past few editions of the model have simply been large, soft and alloy Altimas. This was Nissan's shot at fixing this problem, and it has still missed the mark. I could sit here and ramble on about the features it has or needs, but, really, the problem is simple.
