Democrat appeals to students

Elections in Texas, for the most part, are one-sided, but thanks to this year's gubernatorial race, this may no longer hold true. Among the candidates we've been dealt, Democratic candidate Chris Bell stands out from the crowd. For the younger voting population in Texas, Bell's policies are the most sound and hold the most promise for a positive change in the state.

Bell keeps the young voters in mind, focusing on policies that will have a lasting impact on them.

With two conference matches remaining, the Horned Frogs will try to recover from their weekend losses before the Mountain West Conference Championships.Friday night, the Frogs flirted with a possible upset against the No. 9 Utah Utes, but they fell short after a four-game match in front of a school record of more than 850 fans.

Led by freshman outside hitter Lauren Otto, the Frogs started to mount a comeback Friday against the Utes, but it was too little too late

"We needed to finish what we had in game three," head coach Prentice Lewis said.

The smell of an upset was in the air Friday night as the Horned Frogs (17-11 overall, 5-8 conference) nearly beat the No. 9 Utah Utes (21-2 overall, 12-0 conference).The Frogs lost 3 games to 1, but the performance on the court was not necessarily indicative of the final outcome, said Prentice Lewis head coach.

"Utah has a fantastic program, and we played really well," Lewis said, "We came out and played hard."

Leading the Frogs through the match was freshman outside hitter Lauren Otto with 21 points.

The Horned Frogs (17-12 overall, 5-9 conference) faced another 3 game loss against No. 18 BYU Cougars (20-4 overall, 10-3 conference) Saturday night.The Frogs fell short at the beginning of game one and started to climb back up with 12-17. Lauren Otto served three straight aces and there were several kills by Nirelle Hampton and Kourtney Edwards. The Cougars kept their lead however with several blocks with the final score of 30-22.

The H20 Frogs are using Saturday's meet against the BYU Cougars as a way to guage their performance going into the start of conference competitions, said head coach Richard Sybesma.Led by senior distance swimmer Alejandro Gomez and senior sprinter Erica Tate, the Frogs were able to muster 169.5 points against the Cougars aquatic powerhouse.

"They have an advantage getting to train at altitude," Gomez said, "but I felt good, and we had some good races."

Looking for Rebel defeat

The Horned Frogs (5-2 overall and 1-2 in conference) will be trying to even their conference record and extend their winning streak to three games when they visit the UNLV Rebels on Saturday afternoon.Last season, the Frogs beat the Rebels (1-7, 0-4) 51-3 in Fort Worth.

This will be the first trip to UNLV for the Frogs since their 41-18 victory in 1998. The Frogs lead the all-time series 3-1.

One of the keys to last weekend's 26-3 win versus Wyoming was the offense, which looked aggressive, said Gary Patterson, head coach.

Men’s Golf: Frogs to face tough competition in Calif.

As the fall golf season comes to a close, the men's golf team looks to make a team effort as it gets ready for next week's CordeValle Classic in San Martin, Calif. During the previous four fall tournaments, the Frogs have shown flashes of their potential with two second-place finishes. But when they are not hitting on all cylinders, the team has finished 12th and 11th.

Junior Franklin Corpening said the Frogs need more production from the back end of their tournament teams in order to take it to the next level.

Women’s Golf: Coach: Rank doesn’t reflect play

Even though the women's golf team didn't finish as well as they may have wanted, the coach said none of the players are getting down about the team's 11th-place finish at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown.Head coach Angie Ravaioli-Larkin said while the team's finish doesn't look too great on paper, it doesn't reflect the game played.

"Our finish doesn't show that great," Ravaioli-Larkin said. "But it is not that we played badly. Everyone in the league are really good players, which makes for a very competitive game."

Provost sets goal of lowering student-faculty ratio

The provost set a goal to improve the student-faculty ratio from 14.7 to 1, to 13 to 1 at Thursday's Faculty Senate meeting.Provost Nowell Donovan said TCU must hire 59 new faculty to meet this goal.

In the past three years, 41 new faculty positions have been created, Donovan said.

Donovan emphasized to the group of about 40 faculty members the importance of forming one-on-one relationships with students and what it means to teach leadership.
