Bartender remembered by friends and family at Oui Lounge

Published Mar 12, 2010

A bartender well-known among university students will be honored by friends and his family at Oui Lounge this weekend.

Trent Reid was a bartender at the Blue Bonnet Circle location for 28 years before he died of cancer March 1 at the age of 56. Co-workers and "regulars" will hold a memorial for him Saturday night with music by guitarist Bill Hamm, a friend of Reid's, and barbecue.

Chad Chipman, a bartender at the Oui Lounge, said Reid was not only known for his long beard and cowboy hat, but also for his love of history and reading.

The art of DJ Perera, a senior studio art major, will be displayed in two exhibitions in the Metroplex during the months of March and April.

The first exhibition, titled "Introducing DJ Perera," will be hosted at the ThirdSpace Gallery in downtown Dallas until April 3 and will feature between 12 and 15 paintings.

Perera said this is a display-and-sale exhibition, with paintings starting at $600.

"It's going to be the body of work that I've created for the past year," Perera said.

Change in bus route’s time calls for feedback

Published Mar 12, 2010

Relatively few students use public transportation on a regular basis, so they may not think the city's proposal to cut in half the number of times the bus travels on Route 7 is a big deal. However, Route...

Steps to a problem-free spring break

Published Mar 12, 2010

There are just some things students would rather not experience during spring break.

Getting caught up in a foreign country's judicial system; worshipping the porcelain god before, during and after a hangover; and waking up next to a stranger might compete for the top spot on that list.

But as easy as it is to get into those situations, it is just as easy to stay out of them. Having a safe, fun spring break is as easy as 1, 2, 3.

Rifle team owes success this season in part to team of two

Published Mar 12, 2010

With two talented freshmen shooters on the same team - sharing the same name - -things can get a little confusing. Sarah Scherer and Sarah Beard have played an instrumental role in the rifle team's success this season, and they've also become fast friends.

"We call each other clones," Beard said. "It's just fun, it's interesting with two Sarahs."

Head coach Karen Monez said the duo has added incredible depth to this year's team. She also claimed responsibility for Beard's nickname: Palin, after the former vice presidential candidate.

The men's team will play at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters in Las Vegas. The Frogs finished ninth overall in the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational earlier in the month.

Team to host NCAA champs

The TCU women's rifle team will host the NCAA Rifle Championships this weekend, as seven other teams from across the country (Alaska-Fairbanks, West Virginia, Kentucky, Army, Navy, Murray State and Nebraska) travel to Fort Worth to determine the best guns in the nation.

The rifle competition consists of two parts: the air rifle shooting and the smallbore. It takes place after an outstanding season by the Horned Frogs, where they only lost one head-to-head event, and earned first in the two major tournaments they entered.

Letter to the Editor: Fort Worth needs to improve bus system, not cut hours

Published Mar 12, 2010

Thank you for bringing attention to the T's proposal to cut back bus service. Fort Worth and TCU need better bus service, not less bus service. TCU students and employees need to oppose this reduction in service on Route 7, which runs by the university. It's bad for everyone! Contact the T at- [email protected] or call 817-215-8669 to voice your concern.

Roger Pierce is a 1998 TCU graduate and a teacher for FWISD's International Newcomer Academy.

Pollution in small amounts not detrimental to humans

Published Mar 12, 2010

When I read articles like last week's "Neglect of Clean Water Act troubling," by Courtney Baker, it makes me wonder what world some people are living in.

The article makes it seem like pollution is getting worse than it really is and that Americans are suffering from some sort of poisoning epidemic.

I'm going to make a completely bold statement now: not all pollution is bad. Before you almost choke on your all-natural smoothie and go to recycle this paper, let me explain myself.

Proposed additions to shuttles commendable

Published Mar 11, 2010

While many students at the university have reservations about the parking situation, the Student Government Association and the administration should be commended for their efforts to make the best of it by providing a shuttle service and taking extra steps to improve it.

Other universities have similar, or worse, parking situations on their campuses, and many do not have a shuttle option.

Letter to the Editor: ‘Women in sciences’ article inaccurate and offensive

Published Mar 11, 2010

Dear Skiff editors, I am writing in regards to your recent front-page article outlining women in science at TCU. As a woman in the science department I found the article offensive and misguided. First, the picture on the front of the newspaper was of senior biology major Megan Canady. She is the president of Alpha Epsilon Delta, a pre-health honor society at TCU. She was presenting before our professor Dr. Phil Hartman gave his annual talk on the requirements to go to medical school, among other health professions schools.
