For some, Chilean disaster hits home

Published Mar 2, 2010

A university alumna living in Chile woke up to violent shaking in her room on the 15th floor of the apartment building where her family lives in Santiago. As she heard glasses and bottles breaking, paintings falling and furniture shifting, she was sure the building would collapse. After waiting about two and half minutes for the earthquake to end because the shaking made it difficult to move, her family made the descent down the 15 flights of stairs in complete darkness to leave the building. It was one of the scariest things Carla Noriega ever experienced.

Tiger Woods apology disappointing and insincere

Published Feb 26, 2010

On Feb. 19, Tiger Woods broke his three-month silence with a long-awaited 14-minute televised apology. I watched, cringing, as Woods read woodenly from a prepared statement, saying things like he thought since he had "worked so hard" he was "entitled" to "enjoy the temptations" all around him that fame and fortune had brought. He mentioned thinking he didn't have to live within normal marital boundaries, apparently including being faithful. I don't know who wrote this speech, but those things made him sound really arrogant.
