“Don’t ask, don’t tell” comforts only the homophobic

Published Feb 11, 2010

There's nothing wrong with being gay in the military. As long as no one finds out about it.

From the beginning of his campaign, President Barack Obama said he wanted to repeal the "don't ask, don't tell" policy that prevents openly gay men and women from serving in the U.S. military. During his first year in office, Obama did not to try to overturn the policy, but he renewed his call to repeal it during his Jan. 27 State of the Union address.

Refusal of federal money for education affects Texas schoolchildren

Published Feb 11, 2010

Gov. Rick Perry's decision not to compete for up to $700 million in federal money for education may be a move that will make Texas schoolchildren suffer, a university professor said.

James Riddlesperger, a political science professor, said Perry's decision will only put funding for Texas education further behind.

"That money will be spent," Riddlesperger said. "It's already been appropriated. It's going to be spent somewhere, and what that means in terms of Texas is it puts Texas even farther behind in the competition than they would be."

Utah Utes upheaves men’s basketball team 64-55

Published Feb 11, 2010

In a fight to regain Mountain West Conference respectability, the men's basketball team couldn't carry the momentum for a full 40 minutes, dropping a 64-55 decision to the Utah Utes Wednesday night.

The game was hard-fought on both sides, featuring nine lead changes and seven ties.
The Horned Frogs (11-14, 3-7 MWC) kept it close in the first half of the game holding the Utes (11-12, 4-5) to 42.3 percent shooting, going to the locker room with a 32-29 deficit.

Letter to the Editor: Participation in meeting mischaracterized

Published Feb 11, 2010

I would like to correct some information that ran in the Daily Skiff concerning why Dustin Naegle and Erin House were in attendance at the SGA meeting Tuesday night. We were simply there to answer any questions regarding the services offered at Froggie Five-0. A statement in Wednesday's article that "Sadeghi passed both his resolutions with the help of Erin House, a dispatcher for Froggie Five-O, and Dustin Naegle, head supervisor for the safety-escort service" is a gross misrepresentation of our role at that meeting.

Good teachers should be commended for educational efforts

Published Feb 10, 2010

Nearly everyone has a favorite teacher. I can distinctly remember two of mine, Ms. Paque and Ms. Collins. They were great educators, spinning torrents of exciting material out for their students to attempt to catch. They were pleasant and kind, but demanded extraordinary effort. At the time, it seemed a bit overwhelming, and I remember distinct moments when I was ready to quit. Of course, they were experts in encouragement as well.

Rage Against the Machine’s lyrics and philosophy lacking

Published Feb 10, 2010

Editor's note: This column contains explicit lyrics.

I was in my car the other day when "Down Rodeo" by Rage Against the Machine came on the radio. There's no doubt these guys are talented musicians, but their philosophical consistency is lacking.

There were some lines in the song that made me chuckle: "A thousand years they had the tools/ We should be taking them/ Fuck the G-ride! I want the machines that are making them."

Frog men’s basketball sets off against Utah Utes

Published Feb 10, 2010

The struggling Horned Frog basketball team will welcome another squad that has fallen on tough times, the Utah Utes, to Daniel-Meyer Coliseum tonight. Both teams have lost four of their past five games with a win over Air Force, the common denominator for both.

TCU (11-13, 3-6) topped the Falcons 65-51 Saturday in Colorado Springs behind junior guard Greg Hill's career-high 23 points. Prior to the victory, the Frogs had not won a game since they beat UT Pan-American on Jan. 20.
