Life doesn't wait for anyone.

That's what Liz Murray, a woman who went from sleeping on the streets of New York to graduating from Harvard University, told students Monday afternoon.



Both of Murray's parents were drug addicts and she was raised on welfare.



"In my neighborhood, we celebrated 12 holidays a year - the first of the month when the welfare check came in," Murray said. "The mailman was a local celebrity."

Event to bring about AIDS awareness

Student organizer and sophomore international communications major Chad Sluder said the three goals of today's "Lives are on the Line" AIDS event were donations, lobbying and awareness.

Today is the 21st annual World AIDS Day. Through the event he planned at TCU, Sluder said he hoped to raise money to donate to the World Vision program in Zambia. He said World Vision is a nonprofit that organizes programs and fundraisers to help international communities suffering from various illnesses.

Following TCU's 51-10 win over the University of New Mexico, head coach Gary Patterson's wife, Kelsey, was about the only person in the media room for the post-game press conference who wasn't completely happy with the result.

"He's sticky!" Kelsey Patterson said of her husband. "Why can't they use water?"



Coach Patterson's Gatorade shower was sticky and deserved after his football team's historic 12-0 season.



"We finally did it," Patterson said to lead off the post-game press conference.

Campus alcohol violations increase 70 percent

The number of alcohol violations so far this fall is about 70 percent higher than the total number of alcohol violations in fall 2008, according to university statistics, and underage drinking is part of the problem, a school official said.

Don Mills, vice chancellor for student affairs, wrote in an e-mail that the increase in alcohol violations confirms anecdotal information that there appears to be more underage drinking on campus.

Students living in lounge spaces can now request room change

Relief could be on the way for students who have lived in converted lounge spaces or tripled rooms this semester.

Housing and Residence Life began accepting room change requests for the spring 2010 semester on Nov. 9. Because of a lack of vacancies on campus, students who lived in lounge spaces and tripled rooms will receive first pick of available dorm rooms.



Craig Allen, director of Housing and Residence Life, said that in previous years students searched available spaces and made room changes themselves on my.tcu.edu.
