Teens doing more to help pay for college study shows

Published Nov 4, 2009

University graduate student Mary Cassaro said her parents taught her the importance of smart saving skills early on. Around age 12, years before higher education was on her mind, she said money earned from the occasional baby-sitting job allowed her to begin a bank account of her own.

"I think that when emergency situations did come it was nice that (the money) was there," Cassaro said. "It was a last resort kind of thing, but it has helped with everything."

Students learned how environmentalism and feminism related to each other during a panel discussion on ecofeminism Tuesday night.

The panel discussion, co-sponsored by the TCU Women's Network and the Latina sorority Sigma Lambda Alpha, addressed questions about environmental sustainability and the role of women in sustainability.

Stephanie Eady, an environmental science lecturer, defined the term.

Patterson: Frogs can’t rely on fans on road

Published Nov 4, 2009

With No. 14 Utah looming in the distance, Horned Frogs head coach Gary Patterson said in his weekly press conference Tuesday that it is important to focus on what is in front of them as the team prepares for this week's road game against a "resilient" San Diego State Aztecs team.

"I don't think anyone's looking forward to Utah," Patterson said. "I think the fans are, but as far as our kids I don't think so. I think if they would have done that you probably would have seen a little of that against UNLV."

Members work to restore Environmental Club

Published Nov 4, 2009

Members of the TCU Environmental Club worked together this semester to revitalize the group after it nearly died out last year.

The club lacked leadership after its president left to study abroad, said Macy Zander, senior environmental science and political science major. That, combined with members' hectic school and work schedules, caused club involvement to dwindle. As meetings became more sporadic, Zander said, attendance at meetings dropped to as low as four or five people on average.

Soccer seniors started a winning tradition

Published Nov 2, 2009

At the end of each soccer season at Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium, one night is set aside to honor seniors and the contributions they've made to the program. This year's bittersweet ceremony was held Friday night following a 4-1 loss to San Diego State University and ended, as usual, with flowers and a video tribute to this season's three departing seniors, Lizzy Karoly, Kelly Faerber and Michelle Nguyen.

But any Frog soccer fan who has been around for the past four years knows Friday night was also the celebration of a revival that began when this senior class entered TCU.

Letter to the Editor: Rangers aren't the only ones with spirit

Letter to the Editor: Rangers aren’t the only ones with spirit

Published Nov 2, 2009

I am writing in response to Thursday's article about the TCU Rangers. First of all, I'd like to point out that I have not missed a single home football game in the three and a half years I've been attending TCU. I fully support the football team and wish them the best for the remainder of the season. I don't understand how a group of guys dressed nice just standing on the field helps rally school spirit. Yeah, they might be at the game, somewhat adding to the attendance, but that doesn't help get anyone else in there or get people fired up.

The Frogs (8-0, 4-0) stood pat in the BCS rankings after this weekend's 41-0 drubbing of UNLV, but moved up in both the AP and USA Today polls.

While staying at No. 6 in the BCS, the Frogs jumped from the No. 8 spot to No.6 in the AP rankings, though still behind No. 5 Boise State.

In the USA Today poll, however, the Frogs jumped from No. 6 to No. 4, and are ahead of the No. 5 Broncos.

After the game, head coach Gary Patterson spoke about the team's performances and what he did and did not like.

Campus failures shared on community Web site

Published Nov 2, 2009

Frog failures can now be shared among the Horned Frog community through frogmylife.com, a Web site designed to anonymously relate daily mishaps, the site's creator said.

Brandon Corcoran, a sophomore finance and entrepreneurial management major and creator of frogmylife.com, also manages the site, which launched Oct. 19. He said the site is loosely based on fmylife.com, a blog where people share unfortunate happenings, but is aimed at TCU students. This makes the stories more relevant since many stories involve campus and places nearby, he said.
