Members of the Executive Cabinet celebrated Tuesday after the Student Government Association House of Student Representatives approved the budget for fiscal year 2009-2010, which created a special fund for concerts and performances.

The budget, which totaled $335,000 from student body fees, included $23,000 for the Big Concert Initiative. The initiative is what SGA has contributed to the pool of money to host a concert featuring a popular performing artists like Pat Green, Programming Council Chair Kennedy Stewart said.

Opposition to a gun bill allowing licensed people to carry handguns on college campuses grows as students from the university and the University of Texas take to the streets with a petition to be presented in committee in the hopes of keeping the bill on the floor.

Jordan Adair, a sophomore communications major, and Jackie Mintz, a sophomore at UT, said they circulated the petition around both campuses.

Adair said she got four pages of signatures with about 30 signatures per sheet. She said she found few students who supported the bill, or who had no opinion.

Freshmen will have more options next school year thanks to changes to the Freshman Interest Groups on campus, a university official said.

Additions to Freshman Interest Groups, residence hall communities based on specific themes, include the addition of a Creativity and Performing Arts group, which targets students who have an interest in the arts, from music to drama, and Pre-Health, which focuses on the medical field, said Heather Miller, assistant director of Residential Services.

Carrying on the tradition of using their talents to give back to the community, Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma teamed up to play a benefit concert for the family of a sick child in Birdville this month.

The concert was the culmination of a week-long fundraising campaign to benefit Angel, the 3-year-old son of Francisco Menjivar, a janitor at Birdville High School.

Angel was born with an esophageal hernia that required an operation to repair. The surgery, completed in November, was successful, but left the family with a financial hardship.
