Young leaders igniting change worldwide

Published Nov 25, 2008

As I browsed the world news the night after the declaration of the U.S. election results, I noticed a couple of changes.

The big change was in America, of course, with Barack Obama elected as the new president. But the U.S. wasn't the only country grasped by the change in government.

People in a country on the shores of the Indian Ocean and another amid the Himalayas were rejoicing in their share of change as well. But amid the glitz and glamour of the U.S. presidential race, historic changes in the Maldives and Bhutan passed unnoticed to many.

Despite challenges, count blessings this holiday season

Published Nov 25, 2008

The financial crisis has left many unemployed and put a strain on homes in the United States and everywhere. Considering reports about layoffs, as well as budget and paycheck cuts in companies across the board, it may seem difficult to find things to be grateful for when many families are struggling to stay afloat. But despite these challenging times, you only have to look around to realize it's not all bad.

Nonprofits feeling economic pressure, remain hopeful

Published Nov 21, 2008

As the wintry chills set in, the multicolored lights brighten the city and the red kettles make their annual appearance on the sidewalks, pangs of poverty dig a little deeper in some homes. There is no question why the holidays are a time for giving. But this year, the economic crisis has caused some giving hands to hesitate, dwelling on the bank accounts and wallets that are a little bit tighter - a little bit emptier.

University to keep race as admissions criteria

Published Nov 21, 2008

Paige Zinsou, a sophomore premajor, checked the box for Black/African-American when applying to college, but she feels that if she would've checked the box as white, she would still have all the qualifications to be admitted at TCU.

Zinsou has checked black most of her life since middle school, but occasionally she changes it up. Zinzou's mother is Caucasian and her father is of African descent. When Zinzou asked her mother about what she should choose, her mother told her about a pre-kindergarten application she filled out on Paige's behalf.

Anthropology program to move, offer new learning opportunities

Published Nov 21, 2008

The anthropology department's move to Scharbauer Hall next academic year is one of several changes to the department, which is looking to expand after a year of setbacks, professors in the department said.

Miguel Leatham, lecturer and department director, said the department hired professor Dave Aftandilian from the University of Chicago in August, expanding a faculty team that was depleted in 2006 when three anthropology professors left in the span of a year.

Now with a full team of professors, the anthropology program is looking to expand, Leatham said.

TCU beats Air Force 44-10

Published Nov 21, 2008

Prior to kickoff, the seniors of the Horned Frog football team were greeted with a hug from head coach Gary Patterson before being honored with friends and family for their tenure with the team.

The Falcons of the Air Force Academy weren't greeted nearly as warmly when the Frogs took the opening kickoff and scored 2:22 seconds later on a three-yard run by full back Luke Shivers.

"It seemed like everything was working on that first drive," sophomore quarterback Andy Dalton said. "It set the tone and we just went off from there."
