Official: Voter registration not a threat to financial aid

Published Sep 18, 2008

A recent voter registration incident at Virginia Tech has prompted concern among students that registering using their university addresses might cost them their financial aid.

TCU students need not worry about voting penalizations, because voter registration is not used to determine residency in consideration for federal financial aid, said Michael Scott, director of scholarships and student financial aid.

"It's a nonissue," Scott said.

But at Virginia Tech, students were led to believe it was an issue.

TCU's men's club soccer team will head to Nacogdoches to take on Stephen F. Austin University at 3:00 p.m. Saturday. It will be the club's first game of the season.

Kyle Connor, the team's president, said the club is excited about getting the season started.

"We played Stephen F. Austin pretty competitively last year but tied them both times," Connor said. "I think we can beat them this time around."

The team has a lot of new talent and should be more competitive than ever, Connor said.

Quarterbacks

TCU: Andy Dalton continues to improve and look more comfortable in the pocket while taking care of the ball and not being afraid to pull the ball down and run. Dalton threw for 145 yards last week and rushed for 91.

SMU: True freshman Bo Levi Mitchell is completing 59.6 percent of his passes and has 769 yards passing with eight touchdowns. Coach June Jones recently put his confidence in the quarterback, saying he would learn more on the field than on the sideline.

Published Sep 18, 2008

After losing its first match of the season Sunday to the Oklahoma Sooners, the volleyball team returned to its winning ways by defeating the New Mexico Lobos (8-2, 0-1), but it took all five sets to do so.

The Horned Frogs (10-1, 1-0) started off strong in the first two sets (25-16, 25-22), but lost the next two (18-25, 23-25), forcing a winner-take-all fifth set to 15.

The volleyball team came out in the fifth set with the same intensity it started with, winning the final game 15-7.

Plus/minus system won’t help in rankings

Published Sep 17, 2008

When reading the news story "Plus/minus system not widespread on campus," I couldn't help but make some observations. The system, in essence, reverts to a standard grading system some colleges have implemented. Although there isn't a consensus regarding whether TCU should use the plus/minus system, I think it would be appropriate to render a final decision on whether the system will be used. Many people believe using a plus/minus system will strengthen the academic reputation, however, there are other factors that comprise academic reputation besides a plus/minus system.

New department chair hopes to update speech and hearing clinic

Published Sep 17, 2008

Christopher Watts had no plans to enter into the field of speech-language pathology before he went to school at the University of South Alabama. In fact, the main reason he took a course on the subject was because his girlfriend was also taking it.

"I just kind of fell into it," Watts said about the beginning of his interest in the field.

Now, he is the new chair of the Harris College of Nursing and Health Science's Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (COSD). Watts also heads the Miller Speech and Hearing Clinic on campus.

Scholarship renewal requirements adjusted

Published Sep 17, 2008

The Scholarships and Financial Aid Committee is expecting a decrease in formal appeals for scholarship renewal this year because of its decision to change the requirement for renewal from completion of 27 hours per year to 24, a Financial Aid official said.

Michael Scott, director of scholarships and financial aid, said all TCU academic scholarships require a 3.0 GPA at the end of freshman year and a 3.25 GPA for each consecutive year, but what most students seemed to overlook was the 27-hour requirement of past years.
