Patterson: Stanford will prepare Frogs for OU, BYU

Published Sep 10, 2008

The football team's game against Stanford on Saturday will be more of a preview of TCU's upcoming season than its first two games have been, head coach Gary Patterson said Tuesday at the weekly media luncheon.

Patterson said both teams will have to play hard, and the game will be good preparation for later games against the University of Oklahoma and Brigham Young University,

"They're going to line up and say, 'Here we come, can you stop it?'" Patterson said about teams like Stanford, BYU and OU.

TCU does not plan on following in the footsteps of Abilene Christian University by giving free electronic devices to students, a university official said.

This fall, ACU distributed a free Apple iPhone or an Apple iTouch to all 950-plus incoming freshmen.

Tennis court under renovation

Published Sep 10, 2008

With TCU football, there comes an end in the winter. With TCU basketball, there comes an end in the spring. With TCU baseball, there comes an end in the summer. With TCU tennis ... it never ends.

TCU students looking to play a sport, whether it may be for recreation or competition, can look no further than their own Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center, where collegiate tennis is played during the fall and spring. Horned Frog tennis players often hit the amateur circuit during the summer months.

Grant increases contribution to local art education

Published Sep 10, 2008

The Fort Worth Independent School District was chosen to be one out of 24 school districts in the United States to receive a larger federal grant than it ever has before.

Thanks to that, TCU's art department was given $95,000.

The university, along with partners in Fort Worth's art community, will use the grant money to work toward holding professional summer camps for the next three years, giving educators an opportunity to be professionally trained in music, dance, drama and visual arts.

375 men continue tradition on Bid Day

Published Sep 10, 2008

About 375 men crossed over the TCU seal in Sadler Hall on Tuesday as a part of bid day for fraternities on campus.

Josh Schutts, Interfraternity Council adviser, said fraternities have crossed the TCU seal since Fraternity and Sorority Life started at TCU in 1955.

"It signifies that the fraternities are hopefully in line with the values of the institution," Schutts said. "By crossing the seal, they understand that while they are part of their fraternity and their organization, they're also a part of a larger institution, that is TCU."

Palin won’t win over Clinton supporters

Published Sep 9, 2008

When I heard about John McCain's vice presidential pick, I smiled. I thought he was handing the Democrats the presidency on a golden plate. But as the week progressed and the polls came out, I was surprised to see that Sarah Palin is gaining ground with Republicans.

I suppose the initial wave of support she is riding is fueled both by her speech at the Republican convention and the subtle victimization she plays out so well. Why have a candidate with an actual resume when you can put your arm around your pregnant teenage daughter and look like a long-suffering everywoman?

Providing SOS services abroad a smart move

Published Sep 9, 2008

One in every three TCU students studies abroad. The university just made it safer and easier for future Horned Frogs studying around the globe by providing emergency services overseas.

Tracy Williams, associate director for the Center of International Studies, TCU Abroad, told the Skiff that TCU signed a contract with International SOS, an international emergency service provider that will provide medical, personal, travel, legal and security assistance services for students. The story appeared in Friday's issue.

Take advantage of campus resources

Published Sep 9, 2008

TCU is an active campus with its close-knit student body, multiple organizations and top-notch facilities. But I wonder how many students are active when it comes to using on-campus facilities.

I hadn't realized, until now, that a number of on-campus facilities go unnoticed by students. It struck me when a senior in my jogging class said she had never gone to the University Recreation Center.
