Whether this is your first semester here, or your ninth semester, like myself, prepare yourself for a full slate of sports action.

Football

The program you probably care about the most is the football team. And what's not to love?

The team isn't half bad and is making strides to bring home its second Mountain West Conference title. But a couple of things have to fall the Frogs' way to achieve this goal.

The soccer team is back on the pitch, and after the season opener this young team is ready for a successful season.

Junior forward Lizzy Karoly scored twice on six shots and had an assist in the season-opening 5-0 win against Stephen F. Austin on Friday night.

"It was important to come out and set the tone for the rest of the season," Karoly said.

And set the tone is what the team did, scoring twice in the first 10:15 into the match.

More preparation needed for influx of residents

Published Aug 26, 2008

Once again, TCU has more students wanting a place on campus to lay their heads than spaces available.

It's no surprise that there is such a demand for housing. With gas prices still high, there's no need for a long commute, and residence halls promote much needed community and consistency for students during a time where they are undergoing one of the biggest transitions of their lives.

Weather, drainage problem cause for Union’s construction delay

Published Aug 26, 2008

Construction of the Brown-Lupton University Union is scheduled to be completed soon, after more effective drainage plans had to be cleared by the city of Fort Worth, a TCU official said.

Don Mills, vice chancellor for student affairs, said weather, in addition to drainage problems caused by flooding in the Campus Commons and the construction site, led to the BLUU's grand opening being pushed back to Sept. 2 from its expected August opening,

Mills said the drainage problem was an "engineering challenge," but the city has been a good partner.

Barbara Herman, associate vice chancellor for student affairs (center), answers a question posed by an audience member at the town hall meeting Wednesday in the Brown-Lupton Student Center. The other panelists are Catherine Wehlburg, director of the Center for Teaching Excellence (left), and Andy Fort, chairman of the Faculty Senate.

Dorm residents overflow to lounges, study rooms

Published Aug 26, 2008

Demand for on-campus housing has exceeded supply, forcing Residential Services to accommodate students in lounges and study rooms in residence halls for the second year in a row.

Craig Allen, director of Residential Services, said an increasing demand for on-campus housing has been a trend for the past few years.

"More appealing buildings are on campus, causing students to want to live here," he said.

The university introduced a policy last fall requiring freshman and sophomore students to live on campus.

Wikipedia a weak approach to scholarly research

Being Wiki savvy: Is it helping or hurting?

Information inundates the modern college student's world today. Waiting to check out at the grocery store and examining national magazines, one can get up to date on the current affairs of our country. Before the transaction is final and the electronic signature completed, the careful observer of magazine covers will know who delivered a baby, who is undergoing drug rehabilitation and most importantly, what newfangled romances were kindled or irretrievably squashed over the weekend.

Charges against a psychology professor who was accused in 2007 of making a terroristic threat were dismissed in June after he completed a mental health program, according to court documents. The university has declined to comment on his status at the university.

Physical defense key, coach says

Players, coaches and future players alike all use one term to describe Jim Christian - hard-nosed.

While recently-departed head basketball coach Neil Dougherty used a stoic, determined manner of coaching during his tumultuous six-year tenure, Christian stands in stark contrast with his apparent lunch pail-type attitude toward basketball.

Sophomore guard Jason Ebie said Christian's hands-on attitude created a lot of emotion during the first two weeks of team workouts.
