Phelps not only Olympian deserving of praise

Published Aug 27, 2008

Praise Phelps. But let's not forget the rest.

Ask anyone to name one Olympian, and he or she will most likely talk about the world-record-breaking swimmer.

Michael Phelps is one of the most recognized Olympians of all time, thanks to his amazing winning streak - 14 gold medals, eight of which he won at the 2008 Beijing games. But what about other U.S. athletes who have made it big in this year's games?

University commits to a greener campus

All new construction on campus will be built to higher energy efficiency and sustainability standards under an agreement the chancellor signed along with a coalition of college and university leaders.

Under the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment, which Chancellor Victor Boschini signed last spring, TCU has created a committee to oversee the implementation of eco-friendly construction and sustainable materials, headed by Provost Nowell Donovan and made up of other faculty and students.

Officals express concerns about college affordability legislation

Published Aug 27, 2008

Congress said "yes," and the president did too.

Legislators hope the College Opportunity and Affordability Act of 2008 - passed in July - will make higher education more financially feasible for all, but university officials expressed reservations about certain aspects of the law.

"Overall, we're pleased. This legislation has been a long time coming," said Michael Scott, director of scholarships and financial aid. "But you're never going to please everyone."

The founding director of the Schieffer School of Journalism said he will return in the spring to his first loves: writing and teaching.

Tommy Thomason resigned as director in early March, and associate professor of journalism John Tisdale replaced him as interim director. Thomason has been teaching at TCU since 1984 and became interim chair of the journalism department in 1998 before becoming director in 1999. Upcoming semester brimming with sports action

Published Aug 26, 2008

Welcome to fall 2008 Horned Frog athletics.

Whether this is your first semester here, or your ninth semester, like myself, prepare yourself for a full slate of sports action.

Football

The program you probably care about the most is the football team. And what's not to love?

The team isn't half bad and is making strides to bring home its second Mountain West Conference title. But a couple of things have to fall the Frogs' way to achieve this goal.

The soccer team is back on the pitch, and after the season opener this young team is ready for a successful season.

Junior forward Lizzy Karoly scored twice on six shots and had an assist in the season-opening 5-0 win against Stephen F. Austin on Friday night.

"It was important to come out and set the tone for the rest of the season," Karoly said.

And set the tone is what the team did, scoring twice in the first 10:15 into the match.

More preparation needed for influx of residents

Published Aug 26, 2008

Once again, TCU has more students wanting a place on campus to lay their heads than spaces available.

It's no surprise that there is such a demand for housing. With gas prices still high, there's no need for a long commute, and residence halls promote much needed community and consistency for students during a time where they are undergoing one of the biggest transitions of their lives.
