Students rescue woman from house fire

Three college students, one of them from TCU, saved a Fort Worth woman from an early morning house fire and helped to extinguish the fire that engulfed the woman's front porch, said the woman's neighbors.Chris Hillis, a junior political science major, and two high school classmates, said they came out of their house at roughly 2:20 a.m. on Aug. 11 and saw the woman's front porch ablaze. After a neighbor told them someone was inside the house, the students said they ran through the smoke onto the porch and began to knock on windows in an attempt to wake the woman.

All-American end returns to gridiron

After days of speculation concerning his whereabouts and his status with the football team, senior defensive end Tommy Blake is expected to make his return to the team today as it resumes practice after having the day off. Mark Cohen, director of athletics media relations, released a statement Sunday to the Associated Press stating that Blake would return to campus Monday, and attend today's practice.

The defensive end, whose name has appeared on a bevy of preseason All-America teams, returned home to Aransas Pass for what was being called a "personal matter."

Green quarterback to take snaps

The battle to decide who would fill the vacant starting quarterback position has ended as head coach Gary Patterson named Andy Dalton as the starting quarterback this season.Patterson named the redshirt freshman the starter on Sunday, and will be under center when the Frogs open up the season at home in two weeks against Baylor on Sept. 1. Dalton, who has yet to take an official in-game snap in his college career, beat out sophomore Marcus Jackson for the position.

New coaches excited about opportunity

While the majority of athletic programs kept their coaching staffs intact, a couple of programs, football and swimming and diving in particular, brought in fresh faces during the off-season. Justin Fuente, Keegan Walkley and Stephen Jensen have come from programs big and small with stories as different as the two sports they represent to contribute to their respective programs this year and beyond.

Weather did not stop progress

Dallas/Fort Worth experienced a series of rains of Genesian proportions last summer. For nearly seven weeks straight, rainfall drenched the Metroplex causing dams and floodgates to be opened.While these daily showers continued, work progressed as planned for the construction on the TCU campus. The Amon G. Carter and the Kellye Wright Samuelson residence halls are open for business in what used to be a crater in the heart of the university. The construction is still on schedule for a spring opening of the Teresa and Luther King and the Mary and Robert J. Wright residence halls.

Volleyball team beats alumni in exhibition, prepares for season

With the volleyball team in the final stages of preparation for the upcoming season, the group scored an exhibition win against the volleyball's alumni squad Sunday at the University Recreation Center.Although the current team downed the alumni team in four consecutive matches, the former players provided competitive play that the volleyball team was hoping to use to prepare for the beginning of their season.

Last Road Series for TCU Baseball Team

After getting the recent six-game winning streak snapped by Baylor Tuesday night, the TCU baseball team will travel to Salt Lake City on Friday where it will play the University of Utah Utes in their last three road games of the season. The Horned Frogs (34-11, 15-2) gave up three runs to Baylor in the second inning- the only runs of the game giving TCU its second home loss this season.

Head coach Jim Schlossnagle attributed the Horned Frogs offensive struggles to the performance of Baylor Bears starter Wade Mackey, who threw his first-ever complete game.

Some midday showers must have put a damper on the Horned Frogs bats as the 34-11 baseball team was held to just two hits, Tuesday night.

Credit indeed goes to the Baylor Bears starter Wade Mackey who threw a complete game for the first time in his college career. Mackey's nine inning shutout was keyed by his command of three pitches that he kept away from the hot TCU bats which were averaging more than seven runs a game during the last week of play.

"We didn't have any good swings all night," head coach Jim Schlossnagle said. "He was good, really good."

Grief program looking to have long-term impact

In reaction to the significant amount of students who have experienced deaths in their families, Mental Health Services and a campus priest plan to continue what they say is a successful grief support group.Laura Crawley, assistant dean of campus life for health promotion, said campus life has been looking to have a grief program for a while.

It is a group made up of students and "two folks with tremendous experience with grief, hope and loss," Crawley said.

Task force, police to offer free VIN etching on students’ cars

The Tarrant Regional Auto Theft Task Force is teaming up with TCU Police to offer a free VIN number acid-etching service in the alumni parking lot from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday. VIN-etching is an acid-etching process that embeds the VIN number on car windows, said crime prevention officer Pam Christian.

The VIN number is the vehicle identification number found in each car where the windshield meets the dashboard, Christian said.
