The Cowboys need to man up

The Cowboys need to man up

Published Nov 10, 2010

Who needs to man up this week? The Dallas Cowboys.

Wade Phillips, the former head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, was fired Monday after leading the team to a 1-7 start. Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett has taken over as the interim head coach for the rest of the season.

But will this really fix all of the problems with this team?

Only time will tell. My issue with this switch is that Garrett's coaching style is too similar to Phillips' and a coaching change should bring in a different personality to spark a change in mentality.

California should legalize marijuana to generate revenue

Published Nov 10, 2010

The state of California is swamped in a $26.3 billion budget shortfall. This crisis has galvanized efforts to legalize marijuana in an effort to generate revenue via taxation rather than spending money on enforcement.

Despite the newfound momentum, the bill that would legalize small amounts of marijuana possession and growth known as Proposition 19 failed to pass during last week's elections in California. While 46 percent voted in favor of the bill, another 54 percent voted against it.

Working together makes renovations easier for everyone

Published Nov 10, 2010

From the hum of machinery and presence of traffic cones and caution tape to the shirts proclaiming TCU as Texas Construction University, there are constant reminders that our campus is undergoing renovations.

While the new buildings and renovations greatly benefit the campus community, the construction can be an inconvenience to current students. With that said, it is good to see university departments working together to minimize that inconvenience as much as possible.

For those of you who don"t know, I play piano. One of the things that my piano teachers have told me is that repetition is a great way to remember a piece. Apparently, TCU politicians have taken this to heart. Every year, somebody running for student government tells me how they want to improve programs at the university.

While I admire their efforts, one has to wonder if it's all futile. For our answer, let's turn to everyone's favorite buzz kill: economics.

Nathan Navarro, sophomore, Film-TV-Digital Media: "I think it's pretty cool. I don't think we have had anyone of the front cover of Sports Illustrated in a very long time. Other than the fact that this might be a curse, I think we will be fine this week.

Jeremeka Jarrell, senior, social work: "That's exciting."

Power outages anticipated Sunday on campus

The power outages aren't over for students living in main campus residence halls.

An e-mail sent to faculty and staff Wednesday afternoon announced that more than 20 campus buildings, including most residence halls and the student union, will be without power from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.

The electricity will be shut down by the Physical Plant in order to make repairs to a campus electrical system which had a medium cable voltage failure at 1:41 a.m. last Thursday.

Published Nov 9, 2010

A bill awaiting approval by SGA's Finance Committee may help students save a bit of money on test day.

Tuesday night, SGA Campus Advancement Committee proposed a bill to allocate money to purchase Scantrons for students, Jackie Wheeler, vice president of SGA, said. The Scantrons would be provided for free in the library.

The bill must be approved by the Finance Committee before a final decision by SGA members is made. If the bill is passed, SGA will make a trial run this semester by purchasing 2,500 Scantrons, Wheeler said.
