Don’t leave items in car unattended

Published Nov 9, 2010

As Sgt. Kelly Ham responded to a call for a suspicious vehicle in a campus parking lot, he said he counted 12 visible GPS devices on car dashboards.

He said when he attended the call for the suspicious vehicle, it didn't seem like students paid close attention to the warnings that had been sent out in regard to the recent burglaries.

"If the burglars don't see anything to steal, more than likely they won't break out a window to look through the car," he said.

Free scantron bill awaits approval in SGA

Published Nov 9, 2010

A bill awaiting approval by SGA's Finance Committee may help students save a bit of money on test day.

Tuesday night, SGA Campus Advancement Committee proposed a bill to allocate money to purchase Scantrons for students, Jackie Wheeler, vice president of SGA, said. The Scantrons would be provided for free in the library.

The bill must be approved by the Finance Committee before a final decision by SGA members is made. If the bill is passed, SGA will make a trial run this semester by purchasing 2,500 Scantrons, Wheeler said.

Republicans need to be cooperative, not obstruct

Published Nov 8, 2010

The 2010 midterm elections were an obvious example that voters were not happy with the direction of the country and did not see the change in Washington that they envisioned two years earlier. Voters were still concerned about the unemployment rate, and they have now put Republicans into office in hopes that they will adequately deal with unemployment issues.

As a result of these elections, I expect three main things will happen.

In 2008, the Horned Frogs left Salt Lake City with their heads hung low after a 13-10 loss that snapped their winning streak and a season full of promise. But after an unpredictable 47-7 blowout over the University of Utah Saturday, the 10-0 Horned Frogs remain at No. 3 in the BCS polls this week and advanced to No. 3 in the AP and USA Today polls. Now a BCS bowl game appearance is on the horizon.

Kevin Ash, chief administrative officer of the Rose Bowl game, said that TCU's performance against Utah sent a message in the BCS.

Elections an opportunity to be involved in government process

Published Nov 8, 2010

On the night of Nov. 2, a group of TCU students went to KXAS NBC Channel 5 as volunteers to enter elections results into the system, myself included. Many of us were nervous and unsure of what to do. But we eventually found a rhythm and without thinking about it, we became a part of the democratic process.

We saw what happened behind the scenes during an election and heard what the people who run the elections had to say. We typed, phoned and updated from 6 p.m. to midnight and left laughing and talking about how great it had been.

Students should still exercise caution

Published Nov 8, 2010

On a beautiful campus like TCU's, it's easy for students to feel safe. But incidents like the gunpoint robbery just one block south of Berry Street Friday night remind us how careful we must be when we leave the TCU bubble.

After the sexual assault that occurred in the fall of last year, the university formed the Safety and Security Committee to address safety on campus, according to a previous Daily Skiff article. Since then, the university has increased the number of street lights on campus as a response to the student request for better lighting.
