Five players selected in MLB draft

Five Horned Frog baseball players were drafted on the second day of the 2010 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft.

Bryan Holaday (6th round) was the first Frog to be drafted as he went to the Detroit Tigers. Also drafted were Greg Holle (11th round, Milwaukee), Steven Maxwell (12th round, Minnesota), Matt Curry (16th round, Pittsburgh) and Tyler Lockwood (25th round, Boston).

The Baylor Bears couldn't muster two victories in one day as TCU (49-11) ousted Baylor (36-24) from the Fort Worth Regional 9-0 and advanced to the Austin Super Regional.

The Frogs will play a best-of-three series Super Regional rematch against the Texas Longhorns this weekend for a birth to the College World Series.



Frogs' starting pitcher Steven Maxwell (11-1), who reps the Mountain West Pitcher of the Year honors, dueled with Bears' starting pitcher Craig Fritsch (2-4) into the fourth inning Sunday night.

Senior catcher Bryan Holaday remains one of three finalists for the Coleman Company-Johnny Bench Award, an award intended to recognize college baseball's top catcher.

The winner of the award will be announced on July 1 in Wichita, Kansas.



According to JohnnyBench.com, the Johnny Bench Award was created in 2000 to honor the best college baseball catcher. It is dedicated to former Cincinnati catcher Johnny Bench, who was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in January 1989 and by some considered to be the best defensive catcher in baseball history.

Men’s golf ready for championships

The No. 17 Horned Frogs men's golf program will travel to The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tenn. for the NCAA National Championships for their 15th appearance Tuesday.

The last time that the NCAA National Championships were held at The Honors Course came during the 1996 season where the Frogs participated in the field and finished 18th overall.



The Frogs will be paired with San Diego and Kent State during the first two rounds of action at the NCAA National Championships.

NCAA Women’s Championships in sight

Three nationally ranked women from the Lady Frogs tennis team will make an appearance at the 2010 NCAA Women's Individual Championships this week at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.

Senior Nina Munch-Soegaard, sophomore Kayla Duncan and junior Katariina Tuohimaa will represent the Frogs at the championship in individual and doubles matches.



Munch-Soegaard, ranked No. 55 nationally, will kick-off action from the singles bracket Wednesday, while the 46th-ranked duo of Duncan and Tuohimaa hit the court Thursday.

Student athletes recognized for contributions

Three student athletes, one baseball player and two from the golf team, were recognized by the Mountain West Conference and the athletic department for their sports achievements.

Sophomore Kyle Winkler was named Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week for his efforts against Cal State Bakersfield this past weekend, while the Athletics Department selected golfers Valentine Derry and sophomore Johan de Beer as its Athletes of the Week for their recent efforts for the Horned Frogs.
