Salinger’s death felt across generations

Published Jan 29, 2010

J.D. Salinger's death signals another loss to the world of American literature. Salinger's most famous book, "The Catcher in the Rye," is a staple of high school reading lists all over the country. It is arguably one of the most beloved books published in the 20th century, but it is also one of the most challenged books of the century. The book quickly became an icon in American culture, solidifying itself as the ultimate insight into teenage angst. Holden Caulfield was the figure adolescent, youth and adult alike could identify with.

Published Jan 29, 2010

The women's tennis team has already bested its 2009 national ranking without even stepping onto the court.

The Frogs, who are set to make a play at the national championships, opened the season ranked two spots ahead of last year's finish.

The Frogs were ranked No. 27 on the initial Campbell/Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll.

Head coach Jefferson Hammond said that it was nice to be ranked in the top 30, but that his expectations were not yet met.

Equestrian team competes against Tennessee-Martin for home event

The No. 7 equestrian program (5-5-0) will host the University of Tennessee-Martin on Saturday for the team's only true home event of the spring season.

Head coach Gary Reynolds said the Horned Frogs will move forward into the spring season without Chloe Baker, who graduated in the fall.

"Just keep on going, that's all you can do," Reynolds said. "I've told the girls that Chloe was one of our great riders and was on the national championship team. We wish her the best. She's meant a lot to TCU while she was here, and we were glad to have her for that time."

Education is more important than the right to long hair

Published Jan 29, 2010

Imagine this scenario: You get pulled out of class midday to be told that you are indefinitely suspended from school until further notice. Later on, you are told that you are prohibited from coming back to class because you violated school dress code - your hair is too long. Furthermore, you are a 4-year-old boy.

After weeks of private tutoring, seclusion from classmates and being banned from the classroom during the ABCs, nap time or Play-Doh fun, Taylor Pugh was finally admitted back to his pre-K class at Floyd Elementary School in Mesquite.

The bullpen should be strong this season as members of the baseball team return with more than 20 appearances each.

TCU baseball head coach Jim Schlossnagle said the pitching staff would have a little different setup this season with senior Tyler Lockwood returning to the bullpen and joining junior Trent Appleby in the long relieve role.

"The last two years (Lockwood) was one of our top two or three pitchers but really his best role is as a relief pitcher," Schlossnagle said.
