Young players fill the outfield

Published Jan 29, 2010

With the loss of senior leadership, a young roster of outfielders will have to step up for the 2010 season.

"We need to get better than we were last year defensively," head coach Jim Schlossnagle said, never mentioning his team's accomplishment of making an appearance in the NCAA Super Regional last June.

"I don't think you can assume anything," he said. "I've tried to preach that to our guys."

Men’s swimming and diving looking to score against Centenary College

Published Jan 29, 2010

The men's swimming and diving team practiced for Saturday's meet versus Centenary College with a major theme in mind: taper time.

To break the monotony of training for primary strokes, head coach Richard Sybesma said Horned Frog swimmers would swim in off-events in Shreveport, La.. This "taper time" consists of a less rigorous competition and workout schedule and is intended to give the team a chance to rest before the Mountain West Championship meet at the end of February.

Track and field head coach Darryl Anderson knows all teams are not created equal. His expectations for the men's and women's squads are different, but Anderson still believes there is championship-talent on both teams.

"On the women's side, it's going to be a work in progress, because we just added three girls at semester...And we feel really good about all three of them, but it's going to take them some time to really get their legs underneath them," Anderson said.

Infield transitions with new starters

Published Jan 29, 2010

Returning only one starting senior to the infield and slotting new starters in all but two infield positions usually doesn't bode well defensively for a baseball team that was on the cusp of a College World Series berth a season ago.

However, the No. 11 preseason ranked Horned Frogs will lean on the experience of the two returning infield starters while hoping that the new starters, one being a junior college transfer, will make a smooth transition into their starting roles.

Men’s basketball defeated by New Mexico 73-57

Published Jan 29, 2010

Though Charles Dickens isn't required reading in many college classes, the men's basketball team could certainly identify with the best of times and the worst of times in their game versus No. 23 New Mexico.

A strong first half punctuated by a last second three-pointer from sophomore guard Ronnie Moss to bring the Horned Frogs (10-12, 2-5 MWC) within two quickly faded into memory as the team lost 73-57 Saturday night at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum thanks to a subpar second-half performance.

Graduate school should be a careful decision

Published Jan 28, 2010

It is a common misconception that young people are uninvolved or unaware of national issues or economic plights. With the nation deep in a recession, this is the opposite of the truth. According to a recent research paper released by scholars at the University of California, Los Angeles, people between the ages of 18 and 25 are more likely to believe that lifelong success is the result of luck rather than personal effort. In other words, the college-age group is the one most affected by the state of the economy in the sense that it creates a gloomy outlook for students' future.

University investigates student branding

The university is investigating a branding incident that resulted in burn injuries for a Kappa Sigma fraternity member more than two weeks ago, university officials said.

"University policy prohibits harming another student, which would obviously include branding," according to a university statement. "It's too early to tell if this incident was related to a student-sponsored activity, but the health and safety of our students is of utmost importance to TCU."

State of the Union receives praise and displeasure from campus

Published Jan 28, 2010

Wednesday night's State of the Union address brought back the spunk President Barack Obama was missing during his first year in office, a political science professor said.

Adam Schiffer, an assistant professor of political science, said Obama's speech was carefully balanced between acknowledging both the setbacks and the accomplishments made during the past year.

"Overall, it was a masterful speech," Schiffer said. "It was pitched at the average, independent American."
