Football leads the way for weekend wins

Published Oct 27, 2009

The board of the Football Writers Association of America selected the No. 6 Horned Frogs as the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl National Team of the Week on Monday, after their 38-7 win at then No. 16 Brigham Young University on Saturday.

Saturday's game between the Frogs and Cougars was the day's only match-up to feature two teams ranked in the BCS standings, putting the team into the national spotlight. Director of Athletic Media Relations Mark Cohen said the award does not carry BCS implications.

The Frogs made their claim as the No. 1 non-automatic qualifying team in the BCS this weekend, moving up to No. 6 in the BCS standings after blowing out BYU 38-7.

TCU passed Boise State as the top-ranked non-AQ team as Boise fell from No. 4 to No. 7 this week, despite a blowout win at Hawaii.

"Chris Petersen and Boise have got a good football team," head coach Gary Patterson said after Saturday's game when asked about BCS rankings.

Now, at the head of the BCS buster pack, TCU controls its own destiny.

To most people, the sight of a skeleton or skull is not exactly a friendly one. But for those who practice Dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead on Nov. 1 and 2, it is one of celebration and remembrance.

Miguel Leatham, an anthropology professor who studies Mexican religion and folklore, said that it was not until recently that Americans, mostly Southwesterners, started celebrating Dia de los Muertos. With the growth of Mexican immigrants came the growth of the holiday.

TV show gives ‘circular’ look into rec center activities

Published Oct 23, 2009

When Brad Christianson arrived at the university in the fall of 2006, he never thought he would produce a television show about the University Recreation Center.

Christianson, a senior film-TV-digital media major and employee of the Recreation Center's marketing office, presented the idea this past summer to start a show called "Rec 360," which highlights activities at the Recreation Center.

The show was named "Rec 360" because it gave a "circular look at Campus Recreation," Jay Iorizzo, associate director of Campus Recreation facilities, wrote in an e-mail.

In front of a sold-out, record-setting crowd of 1875, TCU volleyball, which lost to Colorado State on Sept. 26, got its revenge Thursday night in a thrilling 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-10) upset over the No. 25 Rams.

TCU's win also snapped Colorado State's 12-match win streak that dated back to Sept. 9.
