Horned Frogs fall to Utes in first tourney action

Published May 20, 2009

TCU spoiled an opportunity to impress the NCAA Tournament selection committee in its bid to host a regional, losing to Utah on Wednesday night. Sloppy play and three errors contributed to the Horned Frogs' 9-7 loss on day two of the Mountain West Conference Baseball Championships at Lupton Stadium.

The team led 4-2 after three innings, but allowed the Utes to score six runs in a fourth inning that saw 10 hitters come to the plate and the Horned Frogs never regained the lead. Utah's C.J. Cron delivered the inning's big hit with a two-RBI double.

San Diego State star pitcher leaves in top of eighth inning

Published May 20, 2009

San Diego State's No. 1 draft pick prospect Stephen Strasburg left the Aztec's second Mountain West Championships game in the bottom of the eighth inning with tightness in his right back and side area.

Strasburg had held the New Mexico Lobo's scoreless through 8 when he was lifted. The Aztecs went on to win the game 2-1 despite the Lobo's scoring a run and loading the bases in the bottom of the ninth.

Aztec manager Tony Gwynn didn't seem too concerned by Strasburg's injury after the game.

Executives: College graduates lack non-classroom skills

Published Apr 24, 2009

Poor communication and non-classroom skills continue to hurt new college graduates in the workplace, a university official was told by local business leaders.

Bill Moncrief, senior associate dean of undergraduate studies at the Neeley School of Business, conducted a focus group with 10 Dallas-Fort Worth business executives to discuss what college graduates are lacking upon entering the workforce. Moncrief said he and members of a "curriculum task force" were told that interviewing, critical thinking, and teamwork were areas where college graduates need the most improvement.

Writing anxiety shaped identity

Published Apr 24, 2009

Sitting down in front of a white screen with a small cursor marker blinking at the top left - I think that pretty much sums up college anxiety for me.

In some way, the dichotomy built up between that little cursor and me is what I have to thank for every single achievement of my somewhat crippled and routinely underachieving student career. It was that cursor that ferociously stared me down when I decided to apply for an exchange program taking place between my Swedish college and TCU.

What does it take to run for the position of city councilman?

Well, you must: be 21 years of age or older, be a registered voter, pay a $100 application fee or obtain 250 signatures, be a one-year resident in your district and own a comfortable pair of sneakers.

OK, so the last requirement isn't mandatory, but for Glen Bucy, a junior political science major and candidate for the Fort Worth City Council, it has been an extra little kick on the campaign trail.

Horned Frogs sports hold best memories

Published Apr 24, 2009

This is why the phrase bittersweet was created.

When I was first asked to write a column about sports for the graduation issue, I thought about declining because that would mean my time here is officially over.

This has been the best five years of my life and I am going to miss this school with all of my heart.

So much has changed since I started here in the fall of 2004.
