Dining Services seeks organic food supplier

Dining Services is looking for a company that can supply organic food for Market Square next year, a dining services official said.

Legia Abato, Sodexo district marketing manager, said it is unknown if meal plan prices would increase if organic food was offered at Market Square because Dining Services is still in the planning and research stage. She said Dining Services is looking for organic suppliers in the area.

55 parking spaces to be added next week

In a couple of weeks, students who live on campus might find parking a little easier after the addition of 55 new parking spaces, a university official said.


The parking lot, located on the corner of West Berry Street and Wabash Avenue, is scheduled to open Sept. 19, said DeAnn Jones, coordinator for parking and transportation services.


The university currently has about 7,300 parking spaces on campus, said Harold Leeman, associate director of major projects.

Health Center aims to negotiate cheaper contraceptives

Female students at TCU can expect a reprieve from the high cost of birth control.

The Health Center is in negotiations with pharmaceutical company Warner Chilcott to offer brand-name contraceptives at a discounted price, said a TCU pharmacist.



Frank Calhoon, chief pharmacist of the Health Center Pharmacy, said the clinic is aiming at a contract with Warner Chilcott this fall.



"Hopefully, that will come to pass," Calhoon said. "If not, we're going to work on other contracts."

The start of the Saturday's football game versus the Stanford University Cardinal has been changed from 6 p.m. to noon due to possible severe weather in the evening caused by Hurricane Ike.


According to the National Weather Service's Web site as of 6 p.m. Wednesday, there is a 70 percent chance of rain with wind gusts of 35 to 50 mph Saturday night.


The Saturday afternoon forecast has a 60 percent chance of precipitation with wind gusts of 15 to 45 mph. Rain is predicted to start around 1 p.m.

Athletes’ ‘another mom’ retires after 10-year service

About 50 friends and co-workers gathered on the second floor of the John Justin Athletic Center on Wednesday to offer their well-wishes to Donna Shepherd, who has decided to retire after working for athletic academic services for the past 10 years.

Shepherd, who said she is expecting a grandson around Halloween, began her work at the university in March of 1998 and said she has enjoyed her time at the school ever since.



"It's just time to switch hats," she said. "But it's been a wonderful 10-year experience," Shepherd said.

Health center’s effort to sell cheaper birth control praiseworthy

The Health Center is currently working toward being able to sell brand name contraceptives at a discounted price.

This is an admirable effort by the Health Center to help a great number of students by making birth control more affordable.



Many female students on TCU's campus take birth control for an array of reasons, and the health center has recognized the needs of students and is doing something to help curb the cost for those women who prefer to use a brand-name product.

This fall, ACU distributed a free Apple iPhone or an Apple iTouch to all 950-plus incoming freshmen.

Friedman Tennis Center, where collegiate tennis is played during the fall and spring. Horned Frog tennis players often hit the amateur circuit during the summer months.

Grant increases contribution to local art education

The Fort Worth Independent School District was chosen to be one out of 24 school districts in the United States to receive a larger federal grant than it ever has before.

Thanks to that, TCU's art department was given $95,000.



The university, along with partners in Fort Worth's art community, will use the grant money to work toward holding professional summer camps for the next three years, giving educators an opportunity to be professionally trained in music, dance, drama and visual arts.
