Published Sep 10, 2008

The Campaign for TCU will reach its goal of $250 million ahead of schedule, Chancellor Victor Boschini said Tuesday at the annual University Convocation.

So far, the campaign has raised about $180 million, 72 percent of its $250 million target goal, with only 45 percent of the campaign period elapsed, Boschini said.

Don Whelan, vice chancellor for university advancement, said momentum created by students, athletics and the Commons project has been a large factor in the campaign's success.

Published Sep 10, 2008

The football team's game against Stanford on Saturday will be more of a preview of TCU's upcoming season than its first two games have been, head coach Gary Patterson said Tuesday at the weekly media luncheon.

Patterson said both teams will have to play hard, and the game will be good preparation for later games against the University of Oklahoma and Brigham Young University,

"They're going to line up and say, 'Here we come, can you stop it?'" Patterson said about teams like Stanford, BYU and OU.

Tennis court under renovation

With TCU football, there comes an end in the winter. With TCU basketball, there comes an end in the spring. With TCU baseball, there comes an end in the summer. With TCU tennis ... it never ends.

TCU students looking to play a sport, whether it may be for recreation or competition, can look no further than their own Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center, where collegiate tennis is played during the fall and spring. Horned Frog tennis players often hit the amateur circuit during the summer months.

The Fort Worth Independent School District was chosen to be one out of 24 school districts in the United States to receive a larger federal grant than it ever has before.

Thanks to that, TCU's art department was given $95,000.

The university, along with partners in Fort Worth's art community, will use the grant money to work toward holding professional summer camps for the next three years, giving educators an opportunity to be professionally trained in music, dance, drama and visual arts.

Tailgate well-attended despite reservations about new policy

Published Sep 9, 2008

Free food, drinks and face painting attracted crowds of students to the Frog Frenzy tailgate party at the Campus Commons on Saturday despite suggestions that the new tailgate policy would lower attendance at the party.

With radio favorites playing in the background, students mingled with friends and grabbed a quick bite at the party before making their way to the football stadium.

A couple of students who began line dancing soon turned into a group of about 30 in their purple Class of 2012 T-shirts.

Stephen F. Austin watched as the Horned Frogs ran through purple and white fireworks to open Amon G. Carter Stadium for the year on Saturday. Unfortunately for the Lumberjacks, the fireworks continued when TCU's offense took the field.

Junior tailback Joseph Turner's three rushing touchdowns fueled a 67-7 beating of the visiting Lumberjacks. The 67 points scored in a game was the second most in school history. TCU scored 68 in 1932 against Austin College.
