Senior Devon Kirk returns a hit during the volleyball match against Texas Southern.

Volleyball 4-0 for the first time since 2006

Published Sep 3, 2008

The Horned Frogs rolled past the Texas Southern Tigers at the University Recreation Center on Tuesday, sweeping them 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-13). The team begins the season 4-0 for just the third time in school history.

Despite being up 17-10 in the first set, head volleyball coach Prentice Lewis called a timeout to get her team back on track.

"(Lewis told us) to limit our mistakes, because we had given the other team close to all of their points because of our mistakes, and just take care of our side of the net," freshman setter Megan Munce said.

Key tailback a no-show at season opener

Published Sep 3, 2008

The Horned Frog football team expected senior tailback Aaron Brown to be a big part of its offense this season. So far, he has yet to see any game action because of a violation of university policy prior to a season-opening 26-3 win over the New Mexico Lobos.

Redshirt freshman safety Sir Demarco Bledsoe also did not make the trip to New Mexico for the same reason, according to athletics media relations director Mark Cohen.

Cohen declined to comment on the situation.

Free washers, dryers debut in Clark

Published Sep 3, 2008

Clark Hall is the first dorm on campus to offer free access to washers and dryers in a host of new renovations made last semester.

If free laundry goes well in Clark this year, free laundry will be implemented campus-wide by next fall, said Craig Allen, director of Residential Services.

In April, the Residence Hall Association passed a resolution for free laundry in all residence halls.

Soccer team hopes to add two wins this weekend

Published Aug 29, 2008

After an impressive start to the season with a 5-0 victory over Stephen F. Austin State University on Aug. 22, the soccer team marches on with two home games this weekend.

Although not much is known about this weekend's opponents, head coach Dan Abdalla said his team can expect quite a challenge.

"We know they're both going to be very well-coached, hard-working teams, so they are both going to be games where we have to make sure we bring our top-level game," Abdalla said.

Clinton’s convention speech effective in unifying Party

Published Aug 29, 2008

Hillary Clinton's Tuesday night speech at the Democratic National Convention in Denver was as effective as her gaudy, orange pant-suit. It kept my attention, served its purpose and was aesthetically disturbing.

It all began with a stunning video homage to the former first lady's life work followed by a heartfelt introduction by daughter Chelsea Clinton, whom I actually had the opportunity to speak with when she came to campus last semester.

New Maxima SV not as sporty as advertised

Published Aug 29, 2008

The 2009 Nissan Maxima SV is advertised by Nissan USA as the return to Nissan's past, with the reinvention of its four-door sports car concept. This is a much needed change as the past few editions of the model have simply been large, soft and alloy Altimas. This was Nissan's shot at fixing this problem, and it has still missed the mark. I could sit here and ramble on about the features it has or needs, but, really, the problem is simple.

Feature RBs best fantasy picks

Published Aug 29, 2008

Welcome ladies and gentle people to yet another season of Belichick bashing, Eli jokes and fantasy football guidance with a good dosage of Gulf Coast bias.

I'd like to thank you for reading this column when you probably should be listening to the professor your parents pay for, and I'll do my best to make it worth your while.

Many drafts have already finished, but for those of you with commissioners smart enough to allow a full preseason before the draft, let's work on draft strategy.

Shakespeare Festival to debut next summer

Published Aug 29, 2008

For the TCU theatre department, summer without Shakespeare just didn't seem sweet.

"A community that is as rich in culture and fine arts as Fort Worth, it needs to have a professional Shakespeare company," said Harry Parker, theatre department chair. "It's really a dearth."

Parker and associate theatre professor T. J. Walsh hope to help fill that void with the June 2009 debut of the Trinity Shakespeare Festival at TCU.

University undecided about stance on drinking age

Published Aug 29, 2008

University officials from some of the nation's best-known colleges are pushing for lawmakers to consider lowering the drinking age from 21 to 18, but the chancellor said he is unsure of his stance on the issue.

Chancellor Victor Boschini said he is weighing both sides and has yet to make a decision.

However, Boschini said the university will abide by state and local laws regarding alcohol consumption.
