Woody Allen film combines comedy with tragedy

"Barcelona, my mind is full of foreign people faces ..., I don't exist any more, Barcelona; ... being your sounds wife, your extroverted labyrinth" tells us the song that accompanies the characters along the latest Woody Allen film, "Vicky Cristina Barcelona." Narrated by Christopher Evan Welch, this rueful comedy is one of the best films of the year as it ingeniously combines art, passion, romance and madness in an exotic ambience.

Barnett Shale leads to doubled enrollment in land practices program

A rising demand for land professionals has caused enrollment in TCU's petroleum land practices program to double since last fall, a Neeley School of Business official said.

Marcia Ivey, assistant director of executive development at the Tandy Center for Executive Leadership, said the program was prompted by interest in the Barnett Shale, a large natural gas reserve encompassing more than 5,000 square miles and covering at least 17 counties in North Texas.

Library goes 24/5

Beginning Tuesday, the Mary Couts Burnett Library will be open 24 hours a day for five days a week.

June Koelker, dean of the library, said because of the Labor Day holiday, the library will open at 7 a.m. Tuesday morning and will stay open continuously until Friday night at 8 p.m.



Normally. the library will open Sunday at noon and stay open continuously until Friday at 8 p.m.



Koelker said the Saturday hours of 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. will go unchanged.

TCU's Phi Kappa Sigma chapter has lost its charter and been kicked out of its house, a university official said.

Josh Schutts, coordinator of Fraternity and Sorority Life and IFC adviser, said the decision was made by the national organization in conjunction with TCU this summer.

TCU defeated the University of New Mexico, 37-0, on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007 at Amon Carter Stadium.

Frogs open season with conference game

The football team will begin the season against a conference opponent, the New Mexico Lobos, for the first time since 2003 when they beat Tulane 38-35 as members of Conference USA.

Head coach Gary Patterson knows starting the season on the road against a conference opponent isn't easy.



"Starting off the season with a conference game against a team like New Mexico will be quite a challenge," Patterson said. "Playing against a conference opponent on the road is always tough. We understand that it is going to be a very good crowd and a loud crowd."

Soccer team remains undefeated

The soccer team remained undefeated and with no goals against after a 3-0 win over the Xavier Musketeers.

Another two goal performance from freshman Jordan Calhoun lifted the Frogs to their second victory in as many games. Calhoun's first goal came unassisted in the 17th minute beginning the Frog's scoring. She netted her second goal with two seconds remaining in the half off a hard return header into the box from freshman Alex Mechalske. A swift chip into the bottom left corner put the Frogs up 2-0 going into the half.

Volleyball starts season with win

In a non-conference match in the Nike/Molten Invitational, the Horned Frogs utilized a strong front row attack and accurate passing to sweep the Lady Techsters 25-18, 25-21, 25-15 and open the season with a win.

After falling behind 5-0 in the first game, the Frogs got it together and cruised through the second and third games, tightening their passing and hitting along the way.



Junior Lauren Otto imposed her will from the left side to the tune of 14 kills and senior Devon Kirk pounded 9 kills from the middle.

China’s success in Olympics spreads beyond medals

The closing ceremony in Beijing on Sunday marked the official end of the Olympic Games, but the legacy of the games will follow China for some time, manifested in the twisting steel of the Bird's Nest and, more importantly, the new global perception of the country.

My own perception of China has certainly changed. I knew China was an emerging economic powerhouse, but bicycles, rice paddies and little white stickers on cheap plastic toys were the first images that came to mind prior to the Olympic Games. Now, those pictures will be replaced by the Bird's Nest.

Two directors to fill posts at department

Inclusiveness and Intercultural Services will have two new assistant directors beginning next week to fill the post left vacant by Greg Trevino, who died in May from injuries suffered in an automobile accident, a university official said.

Darron Turner, assistant vice chancellor for student affairs, said Timeka Gordon will begin Tuesday, and April Brown will begin Wednesday.



"We got an opportunity for a second position, so we have two assistant directors," Turner said. "Some of the duties that he (Trevino) had were split into two areas."

University hosts first leadership summit

TCU is hosting an inaugural student leadership summit starting today that will bring together student delegates from Mountain West Conference schools to discuss issues ranging from crisis management to greener campuses, summit organizers said.

The summit, which will take place today and Friday, is a result of a collaboration between TCU and the University of Utah, SGA president Thomas Pressly said.
