Student: new major accomodates established interest

Published Aug 26, 2008

The psychology department is expanding its curriculum by adding a child development major this fall.

The department's Web site said the child development major is a multidisciplinary program that spans across four colleges -- Harris College of Nursing and Health Sciences, AddRan College of Liberal Arts, College of Education and College of Science and Engineering.

The major provides a core of courses in child development that will then be combined with courses in children's studies from other departments.

The program you probably care about the most is the football team. And what's not to love?

The team isn't half bad and is making strides to bring home its second Mountain West Conference title. But a couple of things have to fall the Frogs' way to achieve this goal.

The soccer team is back on the pitch, and after the season opener this young team is ready for a successful season.

Junior forward Lizzy Karoly scored twice on six shots and had an assist in the season-opening 5-0 win against Stephen F. Austin on Friday night.

"It was important to come out and set the tone for the rest of the season," Karoly said.

And set the tone is what the team did, scoring twice in the first 10:15 into the match.

More preparation needed for influx of residents

Published Aug 26, 2008

Once again, TCU has more students wanting a place on campus to lay their heads than spaces available.

It's no surprise that there is such a demand for housing. With gas prices still high, there's no need for a long commute, and residence halls promote much needed community and consistency for students during a time where they are undergoing one of the biggest transitions of their lives.

Weather, drainage problem cause for Union’s construction delay

Construction of the Brown-Lupton University Union is scheduled to be completed soon, after more effective drainage plans had to be cleared by the city of Fort Worth, a TCU official said.

Don Mills, vice chancellor for student affairs, said weather, in addition to drainage problems caused by flooding in the Campus Commons and the construction site, led to the BLUU's grand opening being pushed back to Sept. 2 from its expected August opening,

Mills said the drainage problem was an "engineering challenge," but the city has been a good partner.

Dorm residents overflow to lounges, study rooms

Published Aug 26, 2008

Demand for on-campus housing has exceeded supply, forcing Residential Services to accommodate students in lounges and study rooms in residence halls for the second year in a row.

Craig Allen, director of Residential Services, said an increasing demand for on-campus housing has been a trend for the past few years.

"More appealing buildings are on campus, causing students to want to live here," he said.

The university introduced a policy last fall requiring freshman and sophomore students to live on campus.

key to reduce stress is getting involved

For new freshmen, the excitement of living on their own for the first time can go hand-in-hand with the anxiety that comes with any major life change.

Monica Kintigh, staff counselor at the Counseling, Testing and Mental Health Center, said it is not uncommon for freshmen to come by the center during their first semester for help with dealing with their anxieties.

What song does junior closer Andrew Cashner intimidate opposing batters with? "Guitar Town" by Steve Earle - a song that describes his personality more than his sizzling upper '90s fastball or knee-buckling slider.

Cashner had a simple answer for his peculiar song choice as he spoke between spits into a cup from a front lip full of chewing tobacco.

Alumna gives back to university

When students need help landing a job, building a resume or finding other career advice, many turn to the University Career Services office, especially to Mary Kathleen Baldwin.

Baldwin, a TCU alumna, is the assistant director of marketing and events for Career Services, but does so much more, said her coworker Darin Ford, an associate director of Career Services.
