No. 7 TCU loses to unranked Houston Baptist 7-4 Saturday

The No. 7 TCU baseball team exited the field of Lupton Stadium with bowed heads and slumped shoulders after losing to unranked Houston Baptist University, 7-4, on Saturday.

Junior short stop Taylor Featherston, who went 2-for-3 at the plate, said the game could have ended differently but the team didn't execute plays that could have changed the game.

"It's never good to lose, but they just played a better baseball game then we did," Featherston said. "They did the things they had to when it counted."

Seniors Helena Sverrisdottir, Emily Carter, Micah Garoutte, and Rachel Rentschler may have ended their TCU basketball career with a hard fought 52-47 overtime loss to Utah Saturday afternoon in the finals of the 2011 Mountain West Conference Tournament at the Thomas & Mack Center.

The first half was all Utes (18-16, 7-9 MWC), who jumped out to an early 16-2 lead in the first 8:29 of play and traded baskets in the remainder of the period to enter the locker room with a 30-20 lead.

Rifle team finishes third at NCAA Championships

The TCU women's rifle team improved one spot in the standings to finish third at the NCAA Championships hosted by Columbus State. The Horned Frogs shot a 2,351 in air rifle Saturday to finish third in the discipline. Sarah Scherer had the best individual day, taking home a fourth place finish individually.

Scherer was in second place going into the air rifle finals after firing a 595 in the third relay. In the finals, she shot a 102.0 for a final score of 697.0 which was good enough for a fourth place finish.

The Huskies (0-14) may have drawn first blood with an unearned run in the first inning, but the Frogs quickly took control of the game as TCU (9-4) beat Houston Baptist 7-1 at Lupton Stadium Friday.

Junior pitcher Kyle Winkler pitched for six innings in his fourth straight start. He is now 4-0 for the season. Winkler had 55 strikes on 83 pitches for the night. He has now gone 28 1/3 innings without allowing an earned run.

After a stressful week at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Andy Dalton, Wayne Daniels, Marcus Cannon and several other TCU seniors returned to Fort Worth to put on a pro day for scouts.

Over 20 TCU seniors competed to drills for NFL scouts such as new 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh and Jay Gruden of the Cincinnati Bengals. The early story of the day was Malcolm Williams putting up a 40 inch vertical jump and 10 feet 6 inches in the broad jump.

Twenty former Horned Frogs showed off their skills and athleticism to NFL scouts at Friday's Pro Day.

Friday offered the opportunity for any Frog to impress scouts before the upcoming NFL Draft.

Pro Day began at 9 a.m. Friday in the weight room. Players' official measurements were taken, including height, hand size, wingspan and weight.

Following measurements, players showcased their bench-pressing skills.

University receives necessary permit to house horned frogs on campus

After receiving the necessary permit from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, TCU will be able to house two live horned frogs on campus after it finalizes designs for their habitat, Student Body President Jackie Wheeler said.

Preston Patry, a senior political science major, said by having the horned frogs on campus, students could see what a real horned frog looks like and show support for the university.

"I'm pretty proud to be a Horned Frog and would love to have [them] on campus," Patry said.

No. 2 seeded TCU is set to begin Mountain West Conference Tournament play Friday when the Lady Frogs take on No. 7 New Mexico in the semifinal round today at 4:30 p.m. The Frogs' regular season performance of 21 wins and nine losses earned the team the No. 2 seed as well as a bye into the semifinals. The winner of the tournament automatically advances to the NCAA Tournament. TCU's performance will go a long way in determining whether or not the Frogs receive an invitation to the NCAA's.
