SGA candidates discuss platforms at forum

Candidates in the student government elections voiced their opinions on community issues, but some students who listened said they felt they were given too much information at once.The candidate forum, which was held in the Brown-Lupton Student Center Lounge on Monday, included a panel of candidates who answered questions asked by the host and the student audience.

Jason Ratigan, a candidate for vice president, said all the candidates have different ideas but similar goals.

The TCU volleyball team fell to No. 13 Brigham Young in four games Friday and to Utah in three games Saturday in the University Recreation Center.After losing the first two games, TCU rebounded to take the third game before falling to BYU. Freshman setter Nirelle Hampton posted her third double-double of the season against the Cougars.

TCU fell to Utah in three games.

Freshman outside hitter Devon Kirk led TCU with eight kills.

The losses dropped TCU to 3-7 in the Mountain West Conference and 15-11 overall.

Major/Minor fair offers two early registrations

Two early class registration time slots and free popcorn will be up for grabs at Wednesday's Major/Minor Fair.The event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Brown-Lupton Student Center Ballroom, and the registration times will be presented at the awards ceremony, which begins at 1:45 p.m.

The early registration times are door prizes that will allow students to register for classes on the first day possible - no matter their classification. Students do not have to be present at the awards ceremony to claim their prize.

TCU finishes sixth in Colorado

TCU's men's and women's cross country teams were defeated at the 2005 Mountain West Conference Championships meet Saturday on the Collindale Golf Course in Fort Collins, Colo. The men placed last out of 6 teams, while the women placed eighth in a nine-team tournament.

Brigham Young swept the championships.

Senior Kip Kongogo came in at 24:35.3, received All-Conference recognition and third place at the meet.

Despite the poor overall finishes, head coach Patrick Cuniff said he saw good things at the meet.

One clay pot at a time, Chris Powell's advanced ceramics class is decorating the campus with its sculptures outside Moudy Building North.The tall, stackable sculptures went up in early October and will remain up until the end of the semester.

"This is the second semester that students have built sculptures to be displayed on campus," Powell said. "The sculptures allow the class to present what they have been working on for six weeks."

The students, who each individually designed a sculpture, say they agree that they like having their work on display.

The regular season ended for the Horned Frogs Saturday night with a 1-0 loss at New Mexico. Junior forward Angie Nickens, who led the team's offensive attack with three shots, said the team played very well.

"We played with a lot of intensity," Nickens said. "We came out, played a physical game and fought as hard as they did, but in the end they just got a lucky bounce that cost us the game."

Defense class discusses prevention, protection

"No!" Rape Aggression Defense students shouted as they practiced kicks and punches Saturday and Sunday.The students have to vocalize the "no" so they learn to be loud during an attack, TCU Police Officer Pam Christian said.

The RAD class began with a discussion about prevention of attacks. The instructors then taught kicks and punches.

The kicks are used to keep distance from an attacker, Christian said.

Officer Walker Johnson, co-instructor of the course, said the students should not feel squeamish about going for the throat or the eyes.

Saturday's game at New Mexico is the start of a new season for TCU's soccer team, a senior midfielder said."We are going to be trying some new things," Moran Lavi said. "We also want to do well before we go to the conference tournament."

Caroline Starns, a freshman midfielder, said the team will try to press more offensively and attack.

"We want to score as many points as possible," Starns said. "If we score two goals, we want to score three goals."

Lavi said the team wants to pressure on defense as well.

Cross country team looks to win first MWC championship

The cross country teams begin the championship season this weekend, as they travel to Fort Collins, Colo., for their first ever Mountain West Conference Championships.The race at Collindale Golf Course on Saturday will mark the first time a TCU athletic team has competed in a MWC tournament, coach Patrick Cunniff said.

"We are very excited about being the first TCU team to represent the university in a Mountain West Conference championship," Cunniff said.

New SAT format may affect admissions process

It's 8:15 a.m. Inside Room 215, 20 hunched-over students scratch and scrawl away with No. 2 pencils on their first task of the day.

It's both familiar and uncharted territory for these high school juniors and seniors. And for 25 minutes of a grueling three-hour-and-45-minute SAT exam, like the nearly 1.4 million students across the nation who took it in spring and early summer, they must complete not only multiple-choice questions but also, for the first time, demonstrate their writing ability.
