After suffering a fractured left foot which kept him inactive for 38 games, all eyes have been on Dallas guard Rodrigue Beaubois since his return to the hardwood Feb. 16.

The 6-foot-2 guard finished with a solid 14 points and six assists in a 127-109 home rout against New York March 10 and tallied 15 points and four assists in a 101-73 rout of Golden State Sunday. Beaubois has averaged 19.5 minutes per game in 16 games this season, but head coach Rick Carlisle is looking to extend minutes for Beaubois.

Renowned Los Angeles jazz trombonist Alex Iles will be the guest artist at the 34th annual TCU Jazz Festival, which debuts Friday, Director of Jazz Studies and Professor of Music Curt Wilson said.

Iles, who works as a musician and has performed with such names and acts as Joe Cocker, Hans Zimmer and Prince, said that when he plays at festivals like these he often makes some new friends while bumping into some old ones.

"It has a real familial feel to the whole thing, so it's really more of a celebration of the music than anything," he said.

Head baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle said he never doubted his teams attitude or effort, but a win over the Texas State Bobcats Tuesday evening may have taken some of the steam out of his doubts regarding No. 14 TCU's situational intelligence and execution going into TCU's weekend series.

The Horned Frogs (13-7) will face the University of Houston Cougars (11-11) in a three-game series beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Times’ fees push readers away

Facebook redeems itself as emergency communication

Published Mar 24, 2011

Finally, Facebook "stalkers" may have helped someone out.

Facebook users employ it as a distraction, a photo album, a networking tool and even sometimes as a joke. Never would I have thought that Facebook could potentially be a life-saver as well.

According to a March 18 Associated Press article, Nitesh Bhakta, a 20-year-old Georgia college student, saved his family from masked intruders when he asked for help via his Facebook status.

Panel discussion takes rare stance

Published Mar 24, 2011

On Wednesday, three TCU political science professors, Manochehr Dorraj, Ralph Carter and Michael Dodson, hosted a panel about the recent uprisings in the Middle East. The professors said they wanted to provide a proper context as to why these events were occurring so students could be informed on an issue that most know little about.

The major point of discussion was about just how essential social media websites, like Facebook and Twitter, have been in organizing protests as well as in keeping open lines of communication with other resistance members.

Texas should say no to violence as punishment

Published Mar 23, 2011

When I read the Star-Telegram headline from a March 15 story, "Paddling in school is subject of House hearing," I was certain I had read it wrong. Paddling is illegal, I confidently decreed. But, to my shock, corporal punishment is still condoned in the Texas public education system.

I always thought scare-tactic disciplinary action such as paddling and knuckle-rapping were archaic, exaggerated things of the past. But the aforementioned article proved that assumption wholly incorrect.

Phillies, not a shoo-in for NL pennant

Published Mar 23, 2011

As opening day for Major League Baseball looms closer, don't crown the Philadelphia Phillies as the National League pennant winner just yet. Last year's World Series champion San Francisco Giants are in a good position to make another World Series run, while the NL Central should be an exciting divisional race down to game 162 of the regular season.

Here's a full breakdown of the NL's divisional races:

Rastafarianism usually sparks thoughts of ganja, reggae, Jamaica or Bob Marley, but Darren Middleton, a professor of religion at TCU, will discuss Rastafarianism in depth through the use of visual aids and music Thursday.

The lecture, titled "Jah Live!: Art, Religion, and the Internationalization of the Rastafari," is the fourth lecture in the AddRan College of Liberal Arts' Distinguished Faculty Lecture Series.
