Horned Frogs fall to Utes in first tourney action

TCU spoiled an opportunity to impress the NCAA Tournament selection committee in its bid to host a regional, losing to Utah on Wednesday night. Sloppy play and three errors contributed to the Horned Frogs' 9-7 loss on day two of the Mountain West Conference Baseball Championships at Lupton Stadium.

The team led 4-2 after three innings, but allowed the Utes to score six runs in a fourth inning that saw 10 hitters come to the plate and the Horned Frogs never regained the lead. Utah's C.J. Cron delivered the inning's big hit with a two-RBI double.

San Diego State star pitcher leaves in top of eighth inning

San Diego State's No. 1 draft pick prospect Stephen Strasburg left the Aztec's second Mountain West Championships game in the bottom of the eighth inning with tightness in his right back and side area.

Strasburg had held the New Mexico Lobo's scoreless through 8 when he was lifted. The Aztecs went on to win the game 2-1 despite the Lobo's scoring a run and loading the bases in the bottom of the ninth.



Aztec manager Tony Gwynn didn't seem too concerned by Strasburg's injury after the game.

TCU clinches MWC title with win against Rebels

The baseball team clinched its fourth straight Mountain West Conference regular season championship Friday by defeating the Rebels of UNLV, 14-10.

TCU (34-14) clinched the title with a conference record of 14-5 and still has one more game to play against UNLV Saturday at 2 p.m. San Diego State and BYU currently share second place in the conference with 14-8 records and one game remaining.

Pond Street’s future remains unclear

Pond Street Grill, a university dining facility that closed last semester, will not be re-opening as a dining facility next semester because poor business is predicted to continue, a university official said.

Director of Residential Services Craig Allen said the location was re-opened on April 1 as a study space. There are currently no specific ideas about how the space will be converted for the fall semester and what its purpose will be, he said, but he has spoken with the Residence Hall Association about the future of Pond Street Grill.

The two notable departures are running back Aaron Brown, who returned kickoffs, and Drew Combs, recipient of the 2008 College Football Rudy Award, who handled kickoffs for the team.

The deteriorating economic situation is the catalyst for the anticipated decline in hiring, according to a press release issued by NACE.



John Thompson, executive director of Career Services, said the strain on jobs has affected students on campus graduating in 2009 as well.
