Well, it finally happened. A backfire, a compromise, a mishap.

Much to the chagrin of his overwhelming number of supporters and perhaps to the glee of his opponents, in an announcement made Tuesday evening, President Barack Obama stated that he will increase troop numbers in Afghanistan. The purpose of which, he said, will be to combat the remaining areas of insurgency, but more so in order to train the Afghan military to take over and assume eventual total responsibility.

Fox to spotlight watch party Sunday

Campus will be brimming with Horned Frog fever Sunday as the university is scheduled to hold its annual "Meet the Frogs," in which fans will get to meet and receive autographs from their favorite players and afterward will be able to hear the team's BCS bowl fate during the BCS Selection Sunday event at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. FOX is set to film footage of fan reactions inside the coliseum to air on the network's BCS Selection Show.

"We're honored FOX thought enough of the program to spotlight us in this manner," said Mark Cohen, athletics media relations director.

UT, Nebraska coaches talk Frog football

Despite their focus on the Big 12 Championship game tomorrow, University of Texas head coach Mack Brown and University of Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini talked briefly about TCU football.

Brown sent praises in Fort Worth's direction for the job the Frogs have done this season.



"TCU has earned the right to be considered as good as anyone in the country," Brown said. "They've done a tremendous job and I am really proud for them. "



When asked if Texas was the best team in the state, he said the only way to find out is on the gridiron.

University receives limited number of H1N1 vaccines

The university received this week 28 percent of the 10,300 doses of H1N1 vaccine it ordered and will be giving priority to students with underlying health conditions and campus residents, a university official said.

Don Mills, vice chancellor for student affairs, said the students given priority to receive the 2,900 vaccines will be notified by e-mail. To comply with government requirements about how the vaccine is being used, students will be asked to fill out a form online, even if they wish to decline the vaccine, Mills said.

This Sunday, the football team will find out where they will be spending early January. While the Fiesta, Orange and Sugar Bowls are all possibilities, reading the BCS tea leaves and an understanding of how the bowls are chosen leaves one option most likely.

First and foremost, there is an order to how the BCS bowls select teams every year. Once the automatic qualifiers are placed in their bowls, the remaining slots are "drafted" from eligible schools.

Accounting graduate students score highest on exam

For the second year in a row, Master of Accounting graduates at the university have achieved one of the highest pass rates in Texas on the Certified Public Accountant exam.

In the July-August 2009 test window, university MAc graduates passed the uniform accounting exam at a rate of 71.78 percent, said Elaine Cole, public relations manager for the Neeley School of Business. Graduates of the program scored one of the highest pass rates in Texas for the exam last year during the same testing window, she said.

Free flu vaccinations available to students

Free seasonal flu shots will be available for university students at the Brown-Lupton Health Center because of a purchase from the Southern Methodist University Memorial Health Center, a university official said.

Stacey Simpson, administrative assistant at the Brown-Lupton Health Center, wrote in an e-mail that the university did not receive its small order of seasonal flu vaccines because suppliers focused more on manufacturing the H1N1 vaccine.

Horned Frogs season one for the books

With the 2009 regular season in the books, it's finally time to broach the subject that's been taboo all year.

It's the topic head coach Gary Patterson had refused to even speculate on until the last win was in the books. It's that goal in the second-to-last brick in the pyramid that hangs in the Horned Frog locker room.



With a win over 1-11 New Mexico, we can finally - finally! - discuss what many fans have had on their minds since before the season even began: the Horned Frogs in the BCS.
