Fifty shiny, purple bikes. That means 100 tires, fenders and pedals, 50 chains, brake sets and seats, and only two grubby hands to fix their broken parts.

That used to be the undertaking of the Purple Bike Program's only student volunteer, Quinn Garcia. With the accumulation of 35 more volunteers this semester, Garcia, a Brite Divinity student and maintenance coordinator of the program, said he is happy to have a few more helping hands.

Lady Frogs beat conference-leading Utes

The Lady Frogs will have a first-round bye when the Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Championships kick off Tuesday in Las Vegas. And judging from their performance against the University of Utah on Saturday, they've earned it.

The team earned its 20th win of the season by knocking off the Mountain West Conference-leading Utah Utes on Saturday in Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.



Despite trailing by as many as 13 points early in the game, the team bounced back to win 53-47.

Men sweep weekend matches

The No. 43-ranked men's tennis team pulled through with two wins this weekend at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.



The team won 6-1 Friday against No. 63 University of San Diego and 4-3 Saturday against the University of Texas at San Antonio.



The wins moved the team's record to 5-7 in the spring and pushed its consecutive-win streak to three.



Head coach Dave Borelli said the team had more energy against San Diego than it did Sunday against UTSA.

Men’s tennis team falls to Duke

The team was right back in action Monday with an afternoon match against Duke, the No. 38-ranked team in the country. The Horned Frogs' success from the weekend didn't carry over, however, as they fell to the Blue Devils, 4-3.

The team gained the doubles point once again, but dropped four out of six singles matches.



The match was decided when TCU sophomore Zach Nichols fell to Duke's Dylan Arnould 6-3, 6-7, 6-4. The point put Duke up 4-2 with only one match remaining.

Escalating violence in Mexico led the university to issue a travel alert advising spring breakers of the potential dangers in traveling to the country, a university official said.

Lt. Ramiro Abad, head of the campus police patrol division, said the university received the travel alert from the U.S. State Department and passed the information on to students because many travel to Mexico for spring break.

Efforts to expand study abroad program commendable

Despite ongoing campus-wide budget cuts, the university has maintained its commitment to providing students with unique and valuable academic experiences and recently established a partnership with Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.

TCU's newest exchange program will provide study opportunities for students in a variety of disciplines.



Founded as an engineering school in 1981, Nanyang now offers programs in areas such as art, communication and business, so applicants are not going to be limited by their major.

A Mountain West Conference title is no longer in the picture for the women's basketball team, but head coach Jeff Mittie said ending the season with a win against a first-place University of Utah squad could help set the tone for the upcoming conference tournament.

"Both Utah and us are fighting for an NCAA tournament spot and knowing we could likely face them in the Mountain West Championship makes winning Saturday very important," Mittie said.

Student filmmakers get red carpet treatment

Programming Council and the Student Filmmakers Association are hosting a red carpet event that will showcase student-produced films on Friday.

Jason Knutzen, senior radio-TV-film major and president of the Student Filmmakers Association, said the event is a premiere of the projects that students have been working on for the past three semesters.



"We want to showcase the effort, work and time students have put into these films," Knutzen said.



The 50-60 members in the SFA are divided into film crews, directors and actors, Knutzen said.
