The selection for editor-in-chief for the spring 2009 semester was senior Max Landman, a news-editorial journalism major, who currently works as the design editor. He was selected from a pool of four candidates, all of whom are editors this semester.

"Ever since I arrived here at TCU, I've worked with the Skiff as a designer and a design editor, and now I'm just really happy to see it off the last semester I'm here," Landman said.

Editor's note: Athletics Media Relations denied interviews with Frogs head coach Gary Patterson and running back Ryan Christian for this story, and Christian declined to be interviewed without the department's permission.

Standing 5 feet 11 inches tall at a listed weight of 188 pounds, Ryan Christian doesn't fit the mold of a college running back. But the junior has proven to be effective with his playmaking ability on the football field.

The Lady Frogs rode a 28-point performance and a pair of long runs to start halves to an 80-68 upset win over the No. 3 University of Maryland Terrapins.

Junior guard TK LaFleur, in her debut with the Lady Frogs, lit up the Terrapins for a career-high 28 points.

LaFleur said she didn't want to force anything in her debut and just wanted to let the game come to her. The showdown with the Terrapins is something she had been looking forward to for a while.

Mike McCracken, dean of the College of Science and Engineering, will step down at the end of this academic year after serving in that position for 27 years. McCracken said he had been thinking about retiring for the past two years and said he feels like doing something interesting with his life, like travelling, while he has no physical or health impediments.

"I am confident to leave," McCracken said. "The college is in great shape and will continue to function well."

Lifting the Lid

Students searching for a clean and traffic-free restroom on campus may not have to look very far.

When looking for a restroom, students tend to look for specific criteria before visiting the facilities. These are cleanliness, doors that close or lock properly, stalls that are fully stocked with toilet paper and an ample supply of paper towels. It is also important that the restrooms have several stalls to choose from in case there is a line. But of course, not having to deal with any lines is a plus.

Treasurer elected in runoff, catching up to opponent

Published Nov 14, 2008

Sophomore Marlon Figueroa was named Student Government Association treasurer Friday afternoon, defeating junior Greg Hamre by 183 votes.

Figueroa won the runoff election with 992 votes to Hamre's 809 votes.

A runoff was instituted when neither candidate secured 50 percent of the initial vote.

Hamre received 1,403 votes in the initial election, almost 300 more than Figueroa. Sophomore candidate for treasurer Ryan Hoff had 281 votes.

"I'm very pleased with the results," Figueroa said. "I campaigned very hard."

While pay disparities still persist, attitude for improvement applaudable

Published Nov 14, 2008

TCU's new study on gender pay disparities offers both good news and bad news for female professors.

The good news is there may not be as big of a pay disparity as some may think. The bad news is what pay discrepancies exist are largely a result of more men who are in charge of their departments than women.

This would be discouraging any year, but after an election where two women got closer to the leading the country than most had before, it's especially discouraging to see that women still lag behind men in leading academic departments, especially at TCU.

Students should pay for extra carbon use

Published Nov 14, 2008

It was a bright, sunny and unusually warm fall day (thanks, global warming), when I sat down for lunch and committed my meal to coming up with some solutions to how students can become more carbon neutral around campus. A goal of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment is that campuses will become carbon neutral within 10 years of signing the pledge. Already there is a Purple Bike Program, and free rides for students on public buses and trains, so I was looking for something that would aid students who lived too far to ride a bike and weren't near a bus route.
