Business, psychology team up for a leadership program abroad

Published Nov 17, 2008

The psychology department and Neeley School of Business are teaming up for a new study abroad program this summer.

The new program, Enduring Lessons in Leadership, will be located in London and the Isle of Skye, Scotland.

Natasha Chapman, associate director of the Leadership Center, said she thinks going to London and Scotland will give the students a "unique way to learn about leadership." In London, the students will learn about leaders important to the area like Winston Churchill, Ghandi and Queen Elizabeth, how they led and their impact, Chapman said.

Director candidate shares optimistic view of dwindling journalism industry

Published Nov 17, 2008

The third candidate for the Schieffer School of Journalism's director position gave a different outlook on the future of journalism than his two predecessors.

Craig Flournoy, who serves as an assistant professor at Southern Methodist University, said Monday in the Moudy South Building that the turmoil currently affecting the industry benefits young people because it allows them to move up the ladder faster.

"The idea that you could get a meaningful assignment in the first year was impossible," Flournoy said. "That's not the way it is now."

Career Services revamps interview, resume-critique programs

Published Nov 17, 2008

A recent move to Jarvis Hall is not the only change at the University Career Services.

John Thompson, executive director of Career Services, said Career Services is revamping itself through new interview and resume programs, among other changes.

With the new optimal interview feature, students can go online and record mock interviews via webcam. After recording, students can watch the recorded video and self-critique their performance.

Neeley hosts summit to prepare area businesses for economic challenges

Published Nov 17, 2008

In response to the growing economic crisis, the Neeley School of Business, along with the Luther King Capital Management Center for financial studies and the Fort Worth Business Press, will host an economic summit for the local business community today at the Brown-Lupton University Union.

Robert Francis, editor of the Fort Worth Business Press, said the idea for the summit came from the number of Fort Worth Business Press readers who focused on articles written on economic issues and questions that bankers have received from customers.

Students should pay for extra carbon use

Published Nov 14, 2008

It was a bright, sunny and unusually warm fall day (thanks, global warming), when I sat down for lunch and committed my meal to coming up with some solutions to how students can become more carbon neutral around campus. A goal of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment is that campuses will become carbon neutral within 10 years of signing the pledge. Already there is a Purple Bike Program, and free rides for students on public buses and trains, so I was looking for something that would aid students who lived too far to ride a bike and weren't near a bus route.

University looking into gender inequalities

Published Nov 14, 2008

On the heels of a report from the University of Texas that reported the annual salaries of female faculty within its organization averaged $9,000 less than their male counterparts, TCU's own newly released study on gender equality says pay discrepancies only exist because of a male-dominated hierarchy within the university.

The report found that while the average salary of men was higher annually by an average of $16,000, it's because men are more prevalent in administrative positions and departments that have higher market salaries.

Lady Frogs to open season with No. 3 Maryland

Lady Frogs to open season with No. 3 Maryland

Published Nov 14, 2008

The first game of the season often gives teams a chance to get their feet wet and gain experience against a lesser opponent. That is not the case for the Lady Frogs' 2008-09 opener.

TCU will face No. 3 Maryland at 5:30 p.m. tonight at the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The Lady Terrapins reached the Elite Eight of last year's NCAA tournament before bowing out to Stanford and won the national championship in 2006.

"They're very, very talented," TCU head coach Jeff Mittie said. "They're a team that has aspirations to win it all. They've done it before."

Exhibit in corporate offices to showcase student art

Published Nov 14, 2008

Graduate student Shelley Hampe said the art department's connection with its students has changed her as an artist.

The instructors give students space and time to develop, which is rare, and through this she has become more honest in her work, Hampe said. One of the ways she has learned is through TCU's exhibits, like those at the Fort Worth Contemporary Arts gallery.

The "Experiencing Perspectives" exhibit, which opened Oct. 28 in the corporate offices of financial leasing company Daimler Financial Services, showcases two pieces of Hampe's work.

Lady Frogs beat UTSA Roadrunners

Published Nov 14, 2008

Sophomore guard Helena Sverrisdottir fell two assists shy of a triple-double as the Lady Frogs followed up Friday's 80-68 win over no. 3 Maryland with a 73-60 victory against UT-San Antonio on Sunday.

The Lady Frogs struggled to separate themselves from the Roadrunners on the scoreboard in the first half, but the team would take a 42-30 lead into halftime due to clutch outside shooting from junior guard TK LaFleur. Their advantage never dipped below double digits in the second half as the team improved to 2-0 on the season.

Laundry in dorms to be free starting fall 2009

Published Nov 14, 2008

Laundry isn't on the dollar menu anymore.

Starting in fall 2009, washers and dryers will be free to students living on campus, except those living in the Grand Marc or Leibrock Village, an apartment complex east of Sandage Avenue for full-time Brite students.

Craig Allen, director of Residential Services, said free laundry is beneficial because it will save the university money.

"There's a lot of wiring and equipment that we don't have to purchase in order to set laundry rooms up," Allen said.

Published Nov 14, 2008

The Lady Frogs rode a 28-point performance and a pair of long runs to start halves to an 80-68 upset win over the No. 3 University of Maryland Terrapins.

Junior guard TK LaFleur, in her debut with the Lady Frogs, lit up the Terrapins for a career-high 28 points.

LaFleur said she didn't want to force anything in her debut and just wanted to let the game come to her. The showdown with the Terrapins is something she had been looking forward to for a while.
