Students should pay for extra carbon use

Published Nov 14, 2008

It was a bright, sunny and unusually warm fall day (thanks, global warming), when I sat down for lunch and committed my meal to coming up with some solutions to how students can become more carbon neutral around campus. A goal of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment is that campuses will become carbon neutral within 10 years of signing the pledge. Already there is a Purple Bike Program, and free rides for students on public buses and trains, so I was looking for something that would aid students who lived too far to ride a bike and weren't near a bus route.

University looking into gender inequalities

Published Nov 14, 2008

On the heels of a report from the University of Texas that reported the annual salaries of female faculty within its organization averaged $9,000 less than their male counterparts, TCU's own newly released study on gender equality says pay discrepancies only exist because of a male-dominated hierarchy within the university.

The report found that while the average salary of men was higher annually by an average of $16,000, it's because men are more prevalent in administrative positions and departments that have higher market salaries.

Lady Frogs to open season with No. 3 Maryland

Lady Frogs to open season with No. 3 Maryland

Published Nov 14, 2008

The first game of the season often gives teams a chance to get their feet wet and gain experience against a lesser opponent. That is not the case for the Lady Frogs' 2008-09 opener.

TCU will face No. 3 Maryland at 5:30 p.m. tonight at the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The Lady Terrapins reached the Elite Eight of last year's NCAA tournament before bowing out to Stanford and won the national championship in 2006.

"They're very, very talented," TCU head coach Jeff Mittie said. "They're a team that has aspirations to win it all. They've done it before."

Exhibit in corporate offices to showcase student art

Published Nov 14, 2008

Graduate student Shelley Hampe said the art department's connection with its students has changed her as an artist.

The instructors give students space and time to develop, which is rare, and through this she has become more honest in her work, Hampe said. One of the ways she has learned is through TCU's exhibits, like those at the Fort Worth Contemporary Arts gallery.

The "Experiencing Perspectives" exhibit, which opened Oct. 28 in the corporate offices of financial leasing company Daimler Financial Services, showcases two pieces of Hampe's work.

Lady Frogs beat UTSA Roadrunners

Published Nov 14, 2008

Sophomore guard Helena Sverrisdottir fell two assists shy of a triple-double as the Lady Frogs followed up Friday's 80-68 win over no. 3 Maryland with a 73-60 victory against UT-San Antonio on Sunday.

The Lady Frogs struggled to separate themselves from the Roadrunners on the scoreboard in the first half, but the team would take a 42-30 lead into halftime due to clutch outside shooting from junior guard TK LaFleur. Their advantage never dipped below double digits in the second half as the team improved to 2-0 on the season.

Health Center joins schools in fight against depression

Published Nov 13, 2008

TCU is one of 20 universities in the National College Depression Partnership, an 18-month initiative program to learn more about how to identify students with depression, a university physician said.

Dr. Mary Rae, primary physician of the Brown-Lupton Health Center, said health and counseling staff attended a workshop at the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators mental health conference in January. After attending the conference, the university joined the others in an effort to share information on how to treat depression in college students, Rae said.

Sophomore Matt Dietrichson was elected vice president with 1,760 votes against junior Matt Williams, who got 870 votes. Sophomore Kennedy Stewart, who ran unopposed, was elected Programming Council chair.

Commend university for helping employees, students in midst of budget cuts

As the U.S. stands on unsteady ground economically, businesses and individuals alike are looking for ways to cut back spending. TCU is not alone in its effort to trim its budget, but it does stand out...

Money not the only need of veteran-students

Published Nov 13, 2008

With sheer fortitude and patriotism, they enter the battlefield. Just out of high school or their initial years in college, they join the Army, Navy or the Air Force. Some years later, after the war is over or their terms have ended, these army personnel return to their normal lives. Many start reliving their lives and fulfilling the dreams they had sacrificed for the country. For many war veterans, going back to school and getting their degrees has become a major goal to pursue.

Letter to the Editor: University should observe Veteran’s Day holiday

Published Nov 13, 2008

I write this letter as a concerned TCU student. Recently, I chose to write an argumentative essay on why schools should not have class on Veterans Day. Instead, we should observe such a day just as we observe any other holiday.

As I walked to class, I was interested to see what TCU had done to honor our veterans. What did I see? Nothing. No flags at half-staff, and no flags decorating campus. As I picked up my copy of the Skiff, like I do every day, I was expecting to see something patriotic, but there was nothing.

Swimming, diving teams hope to advance standings in MWC at away meets this weekend

Published Nov 13, 2008

The men's and women's swimming and diving teams hope to earn valuable conference wins with meets at the Air Force Academy today and the University of Wyoming on Saturday.

The two road meets are the Frogs' first outside the state of Texas this season.

Head coach Richard Sybesma said the meets will provide a great opportunity for the teams to improve their positions in the Mountain West Conference standings.
