Published Feb 18, 2010

The first annual TCU Women's Baseball Clinic got off to a great start, raising more than $2,500 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation of Tarrant County, an event representative said.

The clinic, created to raise joint support for breast cancer and the new baseball season, had around 180 participants, said Traci Larrison, a senior account executive for ISP Sports at TCU. The event started with a fashion show of all of the team's uniforms with players striking their best poses on the catwalk.

Women’s arena polo team making a comeback

Published Feb 18, 2010

The university's women's arena polo team has been in the shadows in the past two years but has made a strong comeback with this year's team and players, said new head coach Carrie Whitehouse.

The team started off strong this season, winning its first unofficial match against the University of Texas.

The sport is similar to field hockey, except three people are on a horse with a long mallet trying to keep a ball away from the opposing team, said club team member Sarah Ziomek, a freshman environmental science major.

Athletes should be more responsible with their fame and fortune

Published Feb 17, 2010

Some professional athletes just can't get a clue. The law and their respective league officials have told them what not to do, yet they're either too dumbfounded or naive and do it anyway. I'm talking about professional athletes who tarnish the image of themselves and their leagues with headlines of drug possession, reckless driving, illegal firearms, assault and a plethora of other broken laws.

I don't know what compels athletes who are making more than six figures to act so irresponsibly. They risk their money, anger their fans and ruin their image.

Lent should involve a more spiritual sacrifice

Published Feb 17, 2010

As we approach both the Lenten and beach seasons, we forget all about our New Year's resolutions and start worrying about spring break plans. We tried losing our "winter weight" through resolutions, but it is time for a new challenge: sacrifices. We hope that we can "sacrifice" an extra cookie at the BLUU to participate in Lenten promises as well as cut a few extra calories off our diet before we hit the beach.

Decreasing rental rates increases off-campus options

Published Feb 17, 2010

Apartment rental and occupancy rates in the Dallas/Fort Worth and Arlington areas are declining, which could mean more options for university students living off campus and more negotiable rental rates, a university official said.

Craig Allen, director of Housing and Residence Life, said that in the past five years there has been a surge in developers opening apartment complexes around campus. The increase in available housing increased competition between complexes for student residents, he said.

Men’s basketball falls to San Diego State 68-51

Published Feb 17, 2010

As the basketball season begins to fade away, so too has TCU's chance at Mountain West Conference respectability.

The Horned Frogs (12-15, 4-8 MWC) were never really in contention from the start of Tuesday's game, down by double digits for most of the contest on the way to a 68-51 loss to San Diego State (19-7, 8-4).

With the loss, the Frogs have virtually assured themselves of a fifth-straight sub-.500 finish, considering their last four games of the season come against conference foes with winning records, including No. 12 New Mexico and No. 16 BYU.
