Obama’s increase in troops most plausible plan

Well, it finally happened. A backfire, a compromise, a mishap.

Much to the chagrin of his overwhelming number of supporters and perhaps to the glee of his opponents, in an announcement made Tuesday evening, President Barack Obama stated that he will increase troop numbers in Afghanistan. The purpose of which, he said, will be to combat the remaining areas of insurgency, but more so in order to train the Afghan military to take over and assume eventual total responsibility.

Fox to spotlight watch party Sunday

Campus will be brimming with Horned Frog fever Sunday as the university is scheduled to hold its annual "Meet the Frogs," in which fans will get to meet and receive autographs from their favorite players and afterward will be able to hear the team's BCS bowl fate during the BCS Selection Sunday event at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. FOX is set to film footage of fan reactions inside the coliseum to air on the network's BCS Selection Show.

"We're honored FOX thought enough of the program to spotlight us in this manner," said Mark Cohen, athletics media relations director.

UT, Nebraska coaches talk Frog football

Despite their focus on the Big 12 Championship game tomorrow, University of Texas head coach Mack Brown and University of Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini talked briefly about TCU football.

Brown sent praises in Fort Worth's direction for the job the Frogs have done this season.



"TCU has earned the right to be considered as good as anyone in the country," Brown said. "They've done a tremendous job and I am really proud for them. "



When asked if Texas was the best team in the state, he said the only way to find out is on the gridiron.

University receives limited number of H1N1 vaccines

The university received this week 28 percent of the 10,300 doses of H1N1 vaccine it ordered and will be giving priority to students with underlying health conditions and campus residents, a university official said.

Don Mills, vice chancellor for student affairs, said the students given priority to receive the 2,900 vaccines will be notified by e-mail. To comply with government requirements about how the vaccine is being used, students will be asked to fill out a form online, even if they wish to decline the vaccine, Mills said.

Future of writing aid program unclear

University students looking for one-on-one help with writing assignments may lose a valuable campus resource next spring as the future of the Writing Associates Program remains unclear, a program official said.

Dan Williams, director of the Writing Associates Program, said the group's budget is set to expire in June 2010, at the end of the fiscal year. Williams said there was a possibility that the program might be continued in a different form next year, but that he had not yet heard of any decision.

University severs ties with Mexico sister school

The university's Mexican sister school, Universidad de Las Americas-Puebla, will no longer be an option for students seeking a dual degree from both universities, a university official said.

Jane Kucko, director of the Center for International Studies, said UDLA sent a request to the university on March 12, 2009, to terminate the agreement between the two universities. Kucko said the agreement required each university to provide notice a year prior to termination, which she said is standard practice. The termination will be effective March 12, 2010.

Alumnus donation sparks creation of new position

An alumnus and supporter of the Neeley School of Business who was involved in a plane crash on Oct. 6 has pledged $500,000 to the school, making possible the creation of a new position.

The pledge, donated by Robert Schumacher and his wife, Edith, in April, is being used to create a new faculty position in innovation and entrepreneurship, said David Dibble, director of development for the Neeley School of Business.



Robert Schumacher was able to leave the hospital Nov. 27 and is continuing rehabilitation at home, his daughter Kathy Kyle said.

Honors College sets up mentoring program

Looking at other honors colleges around the nation, sophomore political science major Alex Turner noticed one thing missing at TCU and set out to correct it.

"I was surprised we didn't have (a mentoring program,)" Turner said. "I thought since the (Honors Program) was going to make a jump to a college (this spring) ... it would be essential to have a mentorship program."



If all goes according to plan, the Watson Mentoring Program will begin this spring for Honors students looking for guidance, Turner said.
