Barnes & Noble may offer textbook rentals for college students

Students looking to save money on textbooks may soon have access to another option via a new book rental program initiated nationally by Barnes & Noble College Booksellers, a bookstore official said.

Roman Coronado, textbook manager at the university bookstore, said a textbook rental program at the university "could be a potentially good idea," but that the university has not confirmed any plans to implement the program. Barnes & Noble College Booksellers first introduced the rental option at a regional meeting a few months ago.

Conan’s exit leaves student intern stranded

Senior film-TV-digital media major Sam Wunderl was interning for "The Tonight Show" with Conan O'Brien, before O'Brien on Thursday struck a deal with NBC, ending his contract.

Wunderl said he was planning to stay in Los Angeles until June, but the uncertain future of the show has left many on staff worried for their jobs.



Wunderl said the deal between O'Brien and NBC was at a lengthy standstill prior to Thursday because Conan wanted more severance pay for his staff.

Friends honor Bebout at memorial service

Junior nursing major Amanda Michelle Bebout will be remembered as a good friend, a caring nurse, a fearless adventurer, a devoted daughter, and most of all, a loving sister.

The pews in Robert Carr Chapel were filled Friday night as students and community members gathered to mourn the loss of a friend.



Senior entrepreneurial management major Andrew Kangerga said Bebout gave the best hugs and had a love for all of humanity.



"I'm sure she wishes she could take away all our pain," he said.

Neeley Leadership Week kicks off with executive lectures

The Leadership Center and the Neeley School of Business are collaborating to bring guest speakers from TOMS Shoes, Starbucks and Kodak to campus during the TCU Leadership Week Jan. 25-29.

Jimmy Hopper, a senior history major and Student Development Services intern, said speakers include TOMS Shoes founder Blake Mycoskie, Sen. Florence Shapiro and Sandra Taylor, former senior vice president of corporate social responsibility for Starbucks and former vice president and director of public affairs for Kodak.

While it wasn't a 153-point performance like their last game against the UT-Pan American Broncs during the 1997 season, the Frogs won at home Wednesday night to creep above .500 heading into the meat of their conference schedule.

A 70-58 victory saw the ball shared quite a bit, with eight TCU players scoring at least five points as the Frogs improved to 10-9 and the Broncs dropped to 3-17.



Three Horned Frog players scored in double figures during the night, with sophomore guard Ronnie Moss and senior forward Zvonko Buljan tallying double-doubles.

The women's swimming and diving team will face the University of New Mexico Lobos at 2 p.m. Friday at the University Recreation Center natatorium.

The Lady Frogs are 6-0 against the Lobos in the all-time series, which began in 1983.
Head coach Richard Sybesma said the squad cannot take New Mexico for granted because they have been improving during the past few years.



Sophomore freestyle swimmer Lindsey Stevens said everyone has more confidence going into this meet.

Sports in general are riddled with cliches. Each sport has its own, but some have more than others.

With basketball, one of the most common cliches is "basketball is a game of matchups." And when a team is starting from scratch or trying to make a name for itself, this cliche becomes much more evident because, quite simply, rebuilding teams are often overmatched.



The men's basketball team could be considered to be in the rebuilding stage.

TCU track on top of the Mountain West Conference

Coming off a strong performance in College Station last week, the university track and field program looks to advance its season this weekend at the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.

TCU holds the No. 1 spot in the Mountain West Conference in seven events and have record times in the men's and women's 5,000 meters and 4x400-meter relays.



At their season opener in College Station, the Frogs won six events and broke 13 meet records.



They also set two school records in both the men's and women's weight throw.

China feels the consequences of the one-child policy

Millions of Chinese men are going to be growing old alone due to the country's outdated one-child policy, according to the news service AFP. As many as 24 million men could find themselves with no wives by the year 2020. Could China not see this one coming?

The rule, which has been in place for over 30 years, was originally enforced due to overpopulation worries. This has caused there to be a glut of male births and sex-selective abortions, according to the AFP article.

New Zealand and Australia on the map for students

Students hoping for a good look at the Shire from "The Lord of the Rings" or a scenic trip through the land down under have signed up for a new study abroad program in New Zealand and Australia offered by the film-TV-digital media department.

The summer program, which takes place over three weeks, is open to all majors and will be supervised by FTDM professors Tricia Jenkins and Andy Haskett. According to the FTDM study abroad Web site, the program will only be offered once by the department every three to four years.
