Men’s basketball prepared to face UNLV

The men's basketball team is set to take on the UNLV Runnin' Rebels on Saturday after a 70-58 win over UT-Pan American on Wednesday night.

Sophomore guard Ronnie Moss said playing a non-conference game midweek helped get the team going again in preparation for the UNLV conference game.



"This is like practice," he said. "Just [getting] closer with the teammates and [learning] how to play with them."



In the recent win against the UT-Pan American, Moss went for double digits in both points scored with 15, and assists with 11.

Top ranked women’s basketball team to contend with UNLV

The AP No. 23 women's basketball team will travel to match up with UNLV on Saturday.

The UNLV Lady Rebels are 0-3 against conference opponents at home this season and 1-1 in road contests.



Since last week's decisive win over San Diego State University, the Lady Frogs have climbed to the top of the Mountain West Conference standings and have broken into the ESPN/USA Today poll at No. 24.

University’s priority switches to strengthening scholarship

The Campaign for TCU, which has already reached more than 86 percent of its $250 million goal, is changing its priority from the construction of new facilities to scholarships, a school official said.

The $100 million Scholarship Initiative has recently gained priority over new facilities, said David Nolan, associate vice chancellor for university development. As of Tuesday night, the campaign had earned $216,498,370 since it began in 2005, Nolan said.

Students hoping for a good look at the Shire from "The Lord of the Rings" or a scenic trip through the land down under have signed up for a new study abroad program in New Zealand and Australia offered by the film-TV-digital media department.

The summer program, which takes place over three weeks, is open to all majors and will be supervised by FTDM professors Tricia Jenkins and Andy Haskett. According to the FTDM study abroad Web site, the program will only be offered once by the department every three to four years.

Counseling center visits students in dorms

Students seeking guidance from the Counseling, Testing and Mental Health Center don't necessarily have to walk into the office to get help, the center's director said.

Linda Wolszon, director of the center, said residence halls and Greek chapter houses have requested visits from the counseling center to help students cope with the death of junior nursing major Amanda Bebout, who was found dead Monday night at her off-campus residence. The center expects more requests, she said.

Busted pipe triggers fire alarm in the library

Faculty, staff and students visiting the library were evacuated when steam released from a busted pipe in the fire sprinkler control valve set off the building's fire alarm Thursday afternoon.

University police responding to the fire alarm were on the scene and people were sitting outside on the steps of the library while Russell Kintz and Ted Echols, employees from Physical Plant, worked on the problem in the fire sprinkler control valve room under the library, which had been slightly flooded with water from the broken pipe.

While it wasn't a 153-point performance like their last game against the UT-Pan American Broncs during the 1997 season, the Frogs won at home Wednesday night to creep above .500 heading into the meat of their conference schedule.

A 70-58 victory saw the ball shared quite a bit, with eight TCU players scoring at least five points as the Frogs improved to 10-9 and the Broncs dropped to 3-17.



Three Horned Frog players scored in double figures during the night, with sophomore guard Ronnie Moss and senior forward Zvonko Buljan tallying double-doubles.

Women’s swimming team ready to face the Lobos head on

The women's swimming and diving team will face the University of New Mexico Lobos at 2 p.m. Friday at the University Recreation Center natatorium.

The Lady Frogs are 6-0 against the Lobos in the all-time series, which began in 1983.
Head coach Richard Sybesma said the squad cannot take New Mexico for granted because they have been improving during the past few years.



Sophomore freestyle swimmer Lindsey Stevens said everyone has more confidence going into this meet.
