Trustees vote to tear down student center

It's official. The Brown-Lupton Student Center will be no more.The Board of Trustees determined Friday that the TCU community hub will be demolished to make room for a smaller, more efficient building, Provost Nowell Donovan said.

Donovan said Clarence and Kerry Scharbauer Hall will be replacing the current Student Center. The building will house the AddRan College of Humanities and Social Sciences, as well as the Honors College, Donovan said.

A day after a 3-1 win in San Diego, the roles were reversed in Las Vegas for the volleyball team.The team would wind up splitting its weekend West Coast road trip, winning against San Diego State 3-1 (30-16, 30-28, 27-30, 30-23) and dropping Saturday's match to University of Nevada-Las Vegas 3-1 (23-30, 30-21, 17-30, 25-30). A double-double performance from sophomore outside hitter Lauren Otto was not enough to earn the Horned Frogs a win.

Classroom diversity should include conservative ideas

You would think a college campus would be a place where people could feel safe from discrimination.Recent studies indicate otherwise.

According to a survey conducted by the Gender Public Advocacy Coalition, 30 percent of student respondents said they had been discriminated against because they didn't fit expectations for masculinity and femininity. In addition, 25 percent of students of color reported being discriminated against, as well.

How can students be expected to learn in an environment that they can't feel comfortable in?

We've seen him as a Chicago teenager in "Risky Business," a fighter pilot in "Top Gun," a secret agent in "Mission Impossible," and now we'll see him as a senator under pressure in the new drama "Lions for Lambs." In the new Robert Redford-directed film, Tom Cruise plays Senator Jasper Irving, a politician with big plans for the war overseas.

The movie, which opens nationwide Nov. 9, features a star-studded cast including Meryl Streep (The Devil Wears Prada), Michael Pena (Crash) and Robert Redford (All the President's Men, The Natural).

Despite winning performances in a handful of events, the swimming & diving teams could not pull out a victory against the Wyoming on Saturday.A week ago, the Horned Frogs took care of the Air Force Falcons in the University Rec Center by a narrow margin and head coach Richard Sybesma said he had a feeling Saturday's meet was going to produce similar results. Unfortunately, this week had TCU on the losing end.

"We felt like it would be down to the wire again, but we didn't quit hit enough spots," Sybesma said.

Though the women's basketball team is coming off an exhibition rout, the head coach does not want the team to get too ahead of themselves, a senior guard said.With one victory under their belt, the Lady Frogs will face Radford University in round one of the Preseason Women's National Invitation Tournament on Friday.

Head coach Jeff Mittie said this will be the second time in his career at TCU to participate in the tournament. He led the Lady Frogs to round two of the tournament in his first year as head coach in 1999.

Despite a slow start, the men's basketball team found its rhythm Saturday.After trailing for most of the first half, the Horned Frogs would respond with a strong second-half performance en route to an 89-70 victory on opening night against Angelo State at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.

At the beginning of the game, the Rams led by seven points and kept ahead of the Horned Frogs throughout the first half.

Michael Pena spoke with Southern Methodist University students and TCU staff reporter Allie Brown about co-starring in Robert Redford's new drama, "Lions for Lambs", following its screening at SMU's Hughes-Trigg Theater. Pena said this film will reach out to youth in a positive way.Q: What is it about the film that jumps out and pleases you the most?

A: "I mean, just from a technical standpoint meshing everything - all the story lines and all the debates. I think that when I first read the script I was like 'Wow' Robert's going to have a good time trying to mesh it."

Swimming & Diving: Coach: Winning close matches against conference foe pivotal

After an impressive outing against a conference foe, the men's and women's swimming and diving teams will welcome another conference opponent to the University Rec Center Saturday.The teams will face Wyoming at home, on the heels of a sweep against the Air Force Falcons last weekend.

With the men's team standing at 4-0 and the women's team at 4-2 heading into the weekend, head coach Richard Sybesma said the teams are looking at some close races on Saturday, but it could turn out to be a big conference victory for the teams.
